Duties
Assist professional/higher graded personnel with duties requiring knowledge and understanding of tests/procedures/info gathering/reporting/documentation procedures in physical sciences.
Prepare and maintain basic information and documentation in hard copy or electronic files documenting information related to the assigned resource issues.
Carry out data collection and analyses; interprets results and notes observations; prepare reports and answers inquiries, where knowledge and understanding are required to make proper interpretation.
Survey field sites for basic facts for entry into databases and/or geospatial automated information systems in support of other functions in the office/offices with ability to interpret results and recognize unusual features.
Ability to select, extract, collect, and compile information from various sources when this requires considering the applicability of information, as well as the characteristics and quality of the sources.

Qualifications

At the GS-05 Level: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy, preparing and maintaining basic information in hard copy or electronic files; survey field sites for basic facts for entry into databases; perform data collection and analyses, interpret results, and note observations; OR successful completion of a full four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in an appropriate field of physical science or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics except financial and commercial mathematics; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.
Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
Physical Demands: The work is a mixture of sedentary work in the office and field work that involves some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; possibly recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or
requiring lifting of moderately heavy items.
Work Environment: The work involves a mixture of work in the office which is well lit, heated, and air conditioned and where normal safety precautions are adequate, and work in the field under conditions of inclement weather or other discomforts where normal safety precautions must be observed.
Education
This position falls under the Physical Science Technician Series, 1311 Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR).
This position allows for education to be substituted for specialized experience (see qualification section for education requirements). If using education to qualify - You MUST submit a copy of ALL your college transcripts or a list of ALL college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university. Upon selection, official transcripts must be received prior to appointment. If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
