Summary About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities. Duties Serve as assistant athletic trainer and instructor of physical education in the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at (USMAPS). Assist with the planning, implementation, organization, and instruction of a year-round athletic training program for 8 varsity athletic teams and 6 club sport teams. Lead groups or individual cadet candidates in physical training activities. Plan, develop, and recommend substantive changes to Physical Education course material, and physical training programs. Instruct college level courses in Physical Education to men and women in the United States Army. Assist with the physical training portion for the USMAPS summer training program. Specialized experience is preferred in exercise physiology, kinesiology, and personal training. Serve as the assistant athletic trainer, utilizing proper athletic therapy and physical rehabilitation techniques for the treatment of injuries incurred by students. Maintain a high degree of knowledge in techniques of treatments to include ultrasound, electric stimulation, intermittent compression units, cybex, treadmill, and using various forms of equipment and strength training devises etc. Responsible for the prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports related injuries incurred by students. Provide daily follow-up evaluations, and designs and fabricates protective pads and equipment for the prevention and protection of athletic injuries, to include proper taping techniques. Attend professional seminars and presentations on the latest athletic training techniques, in order to keep current, and maintain required annual professional certification. Keep records of student physical achievements, in order to produce a sound recommendation of the student's (fitness) potential to enter the United States Military Academy. Develop professional relationships and maintain contact with Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB) office regarding cadet candidates. Initiate and ensure medical liaison with Keller Army Health Clinic and West Point physicians, staff and faculty, making referrals when emergency situations exist or when symptoms of illnesses/injuries warrant. Develop and maintain professional contact with opposing team's medical staff. Responsible for purchasing and maintaining all athletic training room equipment and supplies, as well as ensuring all sports teams have first aid kits and necessary medical supplies. Serve as a counselor to cadet candidates on matters pertaining to physical training, physical education, medical issues, and athletics. Requirements Conditions of employment Incumbent must be a certified athletic trainer in the State of New York and is required to obtain and maintain annual professional certification. Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Appointment to this position may be subject to a two-year trial period. This is an obligated position. The appointee will be asked to sign an agreement acknowledging that you are aware of the obligation and may be displaced under reduction in force procedures upon the return of the former incumbent. Basic Requirement for Training Instructor (Athletic) Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that demonstrates a practical knowledge of the subject area of the position and of the methods and techniques of instruction, which includes the use of instructional or athletic training techniques and principles for 1) Assisting in teaching and/or instructing an athletic training program for a military installation, college, or other closely related academic institution; 2) Assisting, developing, and/or recommending changes to materials designed to teach courses in physical education; and 3) Performing duties as a licensed athletic trainer in a clinical setting to diagnose, treat, and/or rehabilitate orthopedic injuries. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). -OR- Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Education or a subject area related to the position to be filled, such as Physical Education. (You must include a copy of your transcripts with your application package.) -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. In addition to meeting the requirements above, you will be evaluated on the basis of your level of Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's) in the following four areas: SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Applicants will be evaluated on the following five factors: Ability to diagnose and treat injuries incurred by students as a result of military training, physical education, personal conditioning, or varsity athletic competition. Ability to apply corrective and physical therapy techniques to pre- and post-operative orthopedic patients. Knowledge of and skills to utilize current therapeutic devices to include ultrasound, electric stimulation, intermittent compression units, cybex, zero-gravity treadmill, and aquatic therapeutic devices. Knowledge of hospital administration at a Military Treatment Facility. Ability to educate athletic training students during their clinical rotation in an athletic training facility.
