About the Position: This position is located at Brooke Army Medical Center, Department of Pathology/Hospital Reference Laboratory, Fort Sam Houston, Texas providing diagnostic evaluations of tissue.

Duties
High Complexity Testing- Grossing of surgical specimens, processing of surgical specimens to include proper orientation.
Support the diagnostic evaluation of tissue by histological procedures.
Perform histological duties within the guidelines of the Anatomic Pathology Service.
Utilize a variety of specialized techniques such as histopathological and immunological procedures in identifying specific components.
Perform a variety of extremely difficult, delicate and complex tissue tests including the preparation of frozen sections for rapid diagnosis of tissue during surgery.

A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
A pre-placement medical examination is required.
Moderate to heavy lifting up to 45 pounds and over may be required.
Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
This position may require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).
This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
This position may require the incumbent to work weekends and/or holidays.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
This position requires holidays and weekends calls as needed.
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in cutting and staining very thin sections of human tissue specimens for microscopic examination for abnormalities in cell structure; testing and examining body fluids, etc. for abnormalities in cell structure, depending upon the requirements of the position to be filled; processing specimens and performing stains. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: One and a half years (27 semester hours) of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in Pathology, Histopathology or related field of study. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts for verification).
OR
Combination of experience and education: Specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have more than one year but less than the required education in B. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education above 1 year (18 semester hours) by 9. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.

One year trial/probationary period may be required.
Direct Deposit of Pay is required.
