Summary About the Position: Serves as a Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard) with the Office of the Commandant of Cadets, Department of Physical Education, West Point, NY., managing the daily operations of the United States Military Academy Fitness Center.This is a Part Time position, up to 40 hours per pay period. Learn more about this agency Duties Work with fitness facility users to ensure the equipment is being used in a safe and effective manner. Conduct daily inspections of the fitness facilities to identify sanitation or maintenance problems. Provide guidance on individual fitness programs to meet the users desired needs and goals. Perform lifeguard duties, to include rescues and first aid, at indoor swimming pool. Ensure the security of the fitness center at all times. Requirements Conditions of employment Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights. This position requires the incumbent to work rotating weekends and evenings. Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain lifeguard certification within 6 months. Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. General and Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience which includes (1) in any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with recreational programs/activities, lifeguard duties, AND Six months of specialized experience which includes 1) Experience assisting in preparing and delivering activities in a recreational setting, such as a school, community center, or other type of public or private recreation program; 2) Assisting fitness center/recreational facilities patrons in the use of exercise/recreation tools, equipment, or materials. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03) AND/OR Education: Successful completion of 2 years of study above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: The general and/or specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and some education above the high school level but less than required in B. The percentage of the requirements, must total at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.). (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
