Summary
This position is located in the National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF), Office of Ship Operations, Office of the Associate Administrator for National Security, Maritime Administration (MARAD).
The National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF) is the anchorage site for numerous laid-up of merchant and military ships of all types and designs that are maintained according to their assigned status in an appropriate seaworthy condition.

Duties
The High Voltage Electrical Worker:
Assists in a wide variety of electrical inspections, tests, trouble-shooting, repairs, splicing (high, medium, and low voltage), power distribution, maintenance and installation of high voltage power distribution systems(from 4,000 to 13,200 VAC), 480 VAC, 220 VAC, 11 O VAC, 220 VDC, 110 VDC, 24 VDC and 12 VDC electrical cables, switches, transformers, and other components associated with these electrical systems.
Assists in performing all types of high and low voltage cable splicing which includes above ground, underground, underwater performed on a floating barge and shipboard.
Performs electrical system and equipment maintenance and repair aboard ships, fleet service craft, and around the facility when directed.
The ideal candidate has knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety requirements and National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements associated with the various electrical systems.

DRUG TEST: This position has been determined to be a critical safety/security position as defined in the Department of Transportation (DOT) Order, DOT 3910.1D entitled "Drug and Alcohol-Free Departmental Workplace." If selected for the position you will be required to submit to a pre-employment/pre-appointment drug test, you will also be subject to Random Drug Testing.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT HEALTH ASSESSMENT: If selected for the position you will be required to complete a pre-employment/pre-appointment medical examination and Functional Capacity Examination.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Applicants may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The employee may be required to work in tiring or uncomfortable positions. The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing vertical ladders (up to 50 feet), and crouching. Additionally, may work on top of, under, or in tight compartments in cramped or awkward positions. May perform strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. The work requires frequent lifting and carrying of items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, without assistance, and exerting of similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies and equipment is required. Heavier items must frequently be lifted or moved with the assistance of other workers, or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. The employee is sometimes required to work from !adders or work platforms at varying heights and is also required to work from skiffs, small craft, and floating barges.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed both indoors and outside. The employee is subject to prevailing weather conditions, extreme temperature, wet, and/or icy conditions when working outside. The employee is subject to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes when working either inside or outside. Incumbent works in spaces containing installed asbestos. The employee is subject to cuts, bums, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and other injuries resulting from falls or hazards of the occupation when making repairs, or when positioning and/or moving equipment. The employee must follow prescribed safety practices, and use appropriate safety equipment (e.g., protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, protective clothing, etc.), which is provided. Some safety items may be uncomfortable to wear, or may be required to be worn for prolonged periods of time. The working environment is typical of, and includes all the hazards of, a shipboard, shipyard, and/or marine - environment, including working in adverse climatic conditions and on slippery decks. May be required to work outside of normal hours in response to emergent conditions within the fleet or aboard out ported ships.
Qualifications
Qualifications for the position are based on the training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.
To qualify for the WG-08, your experience should include experience equal or equivalent to the following:
The ability to assist in operating Vacuum Switches, power distribution centers, control power transformers, electrical lockouts, mechanical lockouts, time over current relays, instantaneous ground sensors, ground monitor relays and all other electrical components associated with these types of electrical systems.
