Summary
The employee serves as a Utility Systems Repairer/Operator in the Central Energy Plant (Building 39) and Building 100 (New Bed Tower) Utility Plant within the Facilities Management Service at the James A. Haley Hospital, Tampa, Florida. The facility is a complexity Level 1 facility and ranks among the largest medical centers in the Department of VA. The facility includes, a full medical, surgical, research facility, outpatient clinics spanning central Florida, nursing homes, and domiciliary.

Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to
Operate, troubleshoot and repair of air conditioning utility system, boiler plant utility system, medical air utility system, medical vacuum utility system, direct digital control facility management system (DDC), pneumatic tube system, and Simplex fire alarm monitoring system.
Use computerized DDC software and a variety of controls (electric, pneumatic, electronic) to control air conditioning, boilers, exhaust air, supply air, medical gas, water pumps, filters, generators, blood bank, and bypass fire and sprinkler alarms.
Continuously monitor gauges, charts, pressure/flow transmitters, temperatures, combustion, exhaust, water levels, air flow, pressures, lubricants and adjust controls and accomplish needed repairs, for proper air conditioning and steam production for a variety of cooling and steam load demands.
Start, adjust, stop and perform operational repairs, calibration, and maintenance to all air conditioning and power boiler plant equipment and associated systems.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 12:00 am -12:00 pm or 12:00pm - 12:00 am depending on the needs of the service.

Physical Requirements: Employee must frequently work in hot, humid confined spaces around equipment and systems associated with the utility plant(s). Must climb vertical ladders to access roof(s) and cooling towers. Frequently climbs stairs, bends, crouches, stoops and can endure prolonged periods of standing and walking. Employee must lift parts, supplies and chemicals weighing up to 60 pounds. Employee is required to enter boilers fire and water sides, condensate tanks, deaerator tanks, cooling tower basins, sumps pits, etc. to perform internal inspections as required by VA regulations. Employee must successfully complete yearly physical as required by VHA Directive 1810.
Working Conditions: Incumbent must work in areas of extremely high temperature, constant elevated noise levels, dirt, soot, rotating equipment, oil, grease and other chemicals, and hot steam and condensate piping. The work is generally performed indoors, but also requires frequent outside work and will be exposed to outside weather conditions. Work is subject to cuts, bruises, bums tee from tools, chemicals, steam, and other equipment.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
EPA Certification Requirement: EPA regulations (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act require that technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants into the atmosphere must be certified. Technicians are required to pass an EPA-approved test to earn Section 608 Technician Certification.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
