Summary
Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations, Portland Field Office, Area Port of Anchorage, located in Skagway, Alaska.

Duties
In this position, you will provide a full range of technical and clerical activities in support of CBP Officers (CBPO), CBP Agriculture Specialists (CBPAS), Entry/Import Specialists, and Fines, Penalties and Forfeiture (FPF) Officers. This position starts at a salary of $27.34 (GS-07, Step 1) to $39.36 (GS-08, Step 10).

In this CBP Technician position you will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals performing technical duties requiring application of specialized knowledge of procedures, techniques, regulations, and information. Typical work assignments include:
Providing a full range of technical and clerical activities in support of functions and programs of the office.
Filling out entry documents for non-citizens and assisting with immigrant visa processing, supplying forms to applicants for admission, tracking applications and actions, and clerical preparations.
Executing front desk duties for these programs, to include answering calls, checking-in applicants, verifying records, establishing an applicant's claimed identity, fingerprinting and photographing applicants, answering inquiries, tracking reports, cashier duties, and other general administrative duties.
Working alongside the CBPAS during passenger and pedestrian secondary inspections by reviewing and analyzing images from non-intrusive inspection (e.g., X-ray) equipment on such items as packages, passenger baggage, and cargo.
Providing essential support to CBPOs and CBPASs by inspecting, gathering, and recording information concerning persons, cargo, conveyances, merchandise, mail, and other miscellaneous items in Ports of Entry, in accordance with established guidelines including laws, regulations, and policies.

Shift work: You may be required to perform work on a shift and rotational basis.
Uniform: This position requires wearing a CBP Uniform.
Work Environment: The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines, exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.

Qualifications

Experience:
You qualify for the GS-07 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
Operating scanning equipment, reviewing contents of packages and luggage
Conducting research to provide information on routine inquiries from the public
Performing routine clerical duties, including but not limited to: filling out entry documents, assisting with application processing, supplying forms to applicants for admission after completion, tracking applications and actions, and clerical preparations
Assisting with inspecting cargo to identify possible harmful pests to help prevent the deliberate or accidental introduction of harmful pests, invasive species, and diseases into the US
Coordinating or entering information into automated systems, reconciling accounts and resolving errors on collection documents, and reviewing and correcting error reports.
You qualify for the GS-08 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
Inspecting, gathering, and recording information concerning persons, cargo, conveyances, merchandise, mail, and other miscellaneous items, in accordance with established guidelines under supervision and guidance.
Collecting transporting and destroying contraband, to include the operation and maintenance of incinerators/grinders in all environments.
Conducting real-time monitoring of area and reviewing archived video footage and preparing video archive requests.
Assisting CBPOs with narcotic seizures and seizures of other illegal items to the extent allowed by law; assisting with vehicle inspection and valuation in support of officers.
Preparing reports and correspondence for importing public and/or chain of command and responds to routine inquiries.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
