Summary This position is located in the Police Service at the James J. Peters, VA Medical Center, Bronx, NY. The work includes the operation of gasoline, diesel, or electronic powered wheeled vehicles to haul cargo and fuel, transport passengers, patients, or to tow or recover equipment. The vehicles re driven in restricted traffic environments on Government installations, over public roads and highways or under cross-country conditions. Learn more about this agency Duties Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connections and washing vehicles. Operates (10-52) passenger buses or passenger ambulance buses regardless of gross vehicle weight with a lift modified for wheelchair patients. Operates platform, van, stake and dump trucks, fuel trucks, and trash removal trucks which have a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds up to 32,000 pounds. Travels over uneven terrain, over improved/unimproved roads and through congested areas on both short and long hauls. Performs snow removal on an as needed basis. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration. The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: A current, valid state-issued Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement is required for this position. PLUS (SCREEN OUT) Must have the ability to perform the work of a Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision. This ability would be demonstrated by experience that required a thorough understanding of and following all regulations and laws governing the operation of various types of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles to haul cargo and equipment, and transport passengers; and operate a variety of vehicles to include passenger buses and trucks. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The employee exerts moderate physical efforts in operating, turning, backing, controlling and coupling vehicles which carry heavy loads and a large number of people. Considerable effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs. Operators frequently handle objects weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Vehicles are operated in all types of traffic and weather conditions on public roads and highways and there is exposure to the danger of serious accidents. The employee drives in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. As determined by Facility needs, the Motor Vehicle Operator will work on irregular tours of duty such as 6:00am to 2:30pm, 8:00am to 4:30pm and 11:30am to 8:00pm.
