Summary The incumbent serves as a Motor Vehicle Operator in the Transportation Section of the Facilities & Engineering Service at the VA Maryland Health Care System in Perry Point, Maryland. Learn more about this agency Duties Major duties and responsibilities include: Operates gasoline, diesel, and electric motor vehicles, including sedans, vans, minibuses, ambulances, shuttle buses, light and heavy trucks, and motor coaches to transport patients, visitors, employees, supplies, and equipment. Transports psychiatric, geriatric, and long-term care patients, as well as visitors and employees, to and from VA facilities, medical appointments, transportation terminals, and other assigned destinations. Operates vehicles on public roads and highways in rural and urban areas while complying with traffic laws, safety regulations, and organizational policies. Performs pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and conducts operator-level maintenance, including checking fluid levels, tire pressure, vehicle cleanliness, and overall operating condition. Uses safe driving practices while maneuvering vehicles in congested traffic, loading docks, parking garages, ambulance bays, narrow spaces, and difficult backing situations. Utilizes maps, GPS systems, schedules, and route information to determine efficient travel routes, maintain scheduled stops, and minimize delays caused by traffic or road hazards. Safely loads, unloads, and secures passengers, supplies, packages, and equipment to prevent shifting, damage, or injury during transport. Follows verbal and written instructions from dispatchers, supervisors, trip tickets, and transportation schedules regarding vehicle assignments, destinations, and transportation requirements. Maintains transportation records, delivery documentation, and related logs, and reports accidents, delays, vehicle malfunctions, or safety concerns to supervisors in a timely manner. Maintains professional conduct and provides courteous customer service while interacting with patients, passengers, visitors, staff, and the public during transportation operations. Performing related duties as assigned. Qualifications Commercial Driver's License: Incumbent must possess a State Operator's Permit and at minimum a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). List State Drivers License number in resume. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Moderate physical effort is used in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate, back, and turn vehicles. Additional physical effort is used to load and unload vehicles. Depending on the material being transported, objects lifted may weigh up to 100 pounds. The employee must remain mentally attentive at all times in order to successfully accomplish assignments involving driving. WORK CONDITIONS: The incumbent will be required to work in all types of weather conditions. The incumbent will be working indoors as well as outdoors. There may be occasions when the incumbent is required to operate a motor vehicle in inclement weather conditions such as snow or ice storms, wind, fog, and other wet conditions. The incumbent is subject to cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of exposure to serious accidents or other conditions. The incumbent will be exposed to various driving conditions and traffic patterns. The incumbent will be required to drive vehicles having a gross weight ranging from 10,000 up to 80,000 lbs. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. Additional information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
