Summary The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) seeks to significantly expand the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including the use of Generative AI, to improve the delivery of its services and increase operational effectiveness of its mission to care for our nation's Veterans. VA has an immediate need to hire IT Specialists for AI to continue to lead the Federal Government in the responsible use of AI. Learn more about this agency Duties OIT Mission: The mission of the Office of Information and Technology (OIT) is to collaborate with our business partners to create the best experience for all Veterans. Major Duties: Coordinates, communicates, integrates, and is accountable for the overall success of projects, ensuring alignment with critical agency priorities. Conceives and monitors policies, programs, and projects dealing with the most challenging problems in AI/ML that are of national significance to the agency. Assists with technology projects to provide a unique service, platform, or product. Effectively balances stakeholder needs and requests with product priorities. Formulating product requirements for AI/ML technologies and systems to improve the customer experience of VA's services and/or to increase operational impact. Defines, tracks, and measures mission success metrics. Demonstrates general technical skills in AI/ML technologies, including generative and nongenerative AI/ML algorithms, large language models, commercial and open-source models, model training practices, and data management. Identifies and participates in regional and/or national special projects or studies, work groups, steering groups, task forces, panels, conferences, seminars, frequently focusing on unprecedented problems, policy making, and shaping the future direction of government use of AI/ML. Participates in developing strategic plans for enhancement of system environments, developing functional and technical requirements for acquisitions, conducting cost-benefit analyses, creating feasibility studies, and related activities. Researches and determines or recommends appropriate actions or interpretation of issues impacting the organization. Communicates quantitative and qualitative impact of AI/ML systems to leadership and stakeholders. Fosters regular engagement with business owners and stakeholders to garner their insights and expertise. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, April 15, 2026. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Basic Requirements Experience:Experience must be IT related; the experience may be demonstrated by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (for example, IT certification), as appropriate. For all positions individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the five competencies listed below. The employing agency is responsible for identifying the specific level of proficiency required for each competency at each grade level based on the requirements of the position being filled. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. Selective Placement Factors: In addition to the minimum qualifications described above, you must meet the following requirement(s) to be considered qualified for the position, Experience developing, governing, and/or serving in a product management capacity for AI solutions including machine learning and large language models. These are core capabilities required to be a successful member of the team ensuring AI at VA is deployed effectively and responsibly. AND Specialized Experience: In addition to the minimum qualifications described above, you must meet the following requirements to be considered for the position: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-12 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience for this position is defined as Applicant should have experience in at least one of the following areas: hands-on machine learning model development and deployment, evaluation of large-language-model (LLM)-based enterprise solutions, AI-focused product development, and/or establishment of AI governance and risk management practices. This position is an AI-focused role, and the candidate should have significant experience on an AI-centered team. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
