Summary
The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is actively recruiting for a Pharmacy Technician. This position functions primarily in pharmacies located in Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs}, managed by the Outpatient Section of Pharmacy Service.

Reads and interprets prescriptions, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data on Pharmacy's copy of prescription/order.
Communicates with veterans and PACT Team to answer questions and resolve issues using MyHealthe Vet Secure Messaging as assigned.
Participates in patient education programs, community outreach, and other programs as directed by pharmacy supervisor and Community Outpatient Services management
Conducts monthly inspections of pharmacy stock for outdated and damaged medications.
Maintains cleanliness of pharmacy areas, as assigned.
Provides customer service via telephone coverage for multiple CBOCs.
Resolves delivery and ordering questions for patients.
Refers clinical questions to a pharmacist.
Communicates medication renewal requests needing provider action to the appropriate provider via CPRS progress note entry. Follows-up on requests to assure appropriate action has been taken.
Provides Call Center and Medical Center medication request follow-up as assigned.
Reviews VISTA reports and takes appropriate action to forward patient medication requests, or reviews and acts on Call Center requests.
Maintains a training/education on pharmacy manual for the focus area assigned.
Provides training to new or existing staff so that these competencies are maintained.
Work Schedule: Mondays-Fridays 8:00am-4:30pm with rotating holidays and weekends

In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs for all GS-08 assignments and meet any additional KSAs for the assignment, if indicated:
(a) Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.).
(b) Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures.
(c) Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA
Certification: For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either:
1. Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
OR,
2. National Health career Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT).
Education or Experience:
None required
For all grade levels and positions that accept both education and experience to qualify, equivalent combinations of qualifying education and experience that total at least 100% are qualifying. The combined percentage is determined by adding total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level to the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level.
English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403(f).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7.
Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 50lbs, and bending/stooping.
Grandfathering Provision. Pharmacy technicians employed in VHA on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.
Experience: Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level and demonstrate the KSAs below.
Upon completion of your trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.
