Summary This position is located at Department of Veterans Affairs, Engineering Service, Maintenance and Repair Section. The maintenance mechanic must possess a wide variety of skills and knowledge associated with carpentry, plumbing, painting, metal fabrication, mobile equipment operation, and welding. Learn more about this agency Duties The maintenance mechanic performs a variety of duties including preventive maintenance, repair of buildings, structures and components, building equipment, fixtures, and utility components. The mechanic must possess a wide variety of skills and knowledge associated with carpentry, plumbing, metal fabrication, mobile equipment operation, soldering, brazing, welding, and oxy/acetylene cutting. The mechanic works with both new and existing items. Work includes demolition, removal, installation, modification and alteration. Familiarizes self with how job activities impact VA's goal to implement sound stewardship practices that are protective of the air, water, land, and other natural and cultural resources. This may include activities associated with proper storage, handling and disposal and/or recycling of chemicals and wastes associated with their trades. In accordance with the goals of the VA GEMS program, seeks to cost-effectively meet or exceed compliance with applicable Federal, state and local environmental public health and resource protection laws, regulations, and VA requirements. Carpentry (40%) The journeyman level carpentry skills required as a maintenance mechanic will include sheet rocking, installing metal grids, suspended ceilings, installation of plaster lath, replacement of built-up and shingle roofing, installation of metal/wood windows, doors and frames, floor and ceiling tile, and repair wood flooring. Mechanic must be able to install carpet, cove base, seamless flooring, pour concrete slabs and sidewalks, etc. Journeyman skills will also require building wood equipment and cabinetry. Plumbing (20%) The mechanic will be required to work on the basic components of the hospital plumbing system, repair faucets, sinks, commodes, sewer and water lines, and valves. Plaster/Painting (30%) The mechanic will be required to perform new wall taping and mudding, sheetrock repairs, and plaster/tile repairs. Painting and priming surfaces on new construction and maintain areas during routine inspections. Metal fabrication, welding, and mobile equipment operation (10%) The mechanic works with both new and existing items requiring demolition, removal, installation, modification, and alteration of metal structures and components. The mechanic must be proficient in using a backhoe/front loader, trenching machine, and forklift. Other duties as assigned. Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over, Moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds, Walking 1 hour, Standing 1 hour, Crawling 1-2 hours, Kneeling 1-2 hours, Repeated bending 1-2 hours, Climbing 1-2 hours, Climbing, use of legs and arms, Both legs required, Operation of crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, Far vision correctable in one eye to 202/20 and to 20/40 in the other, Hearing Aid permitted. Employee will be required to work off of high ladders, scaffolds as occasionally necessary, as well as occasional heavy lifting and strenuous exertion. The employee is standing or walking most of the time and must be in very good overall physical condition. The incumbent will be fit tested for a respirator and is required to wear respiratory protection when working in contaminated areas, including asbestos-contaminated areas. Work is accomplished both inside and outside and is usually dirty, dusty, and sometimes greasy. Employee will be exposed to both high and low temperature environment. Employee's working environment will be both inside buildings and outside buildings and will involve walking, climbing (up to 50 feet), crawling, lifting, and bending Education This job does not have an education qualification requirement.
