Summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) seeks a dynamic leader to serve as the Deputy Assistant Executive Director for Risk Reduction (EXRR). This senior executive will advance CPSC’s mission to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury associated with consumer products by leading strategic initiatives in hazard detection, compliance support, and technological innovation.
Duties
This position is located in the Headquarters Office of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Office of the Executive Director, Office of Risk Reduction (EXRR).
In this role, the Deputy Assistant Executive Director (AED) for Risk Reduction will:
Oversee injury data intake, integration, and dissemination to support risk analysis and hazard identification.
Direct product safety assessments, regulated product testing, and hazard analyses in support of the Office of Compliance and Import Safety to ensure adherence to safety standards.
Lead implementation of AI and ML technologies for hazard detection and mitigation; set strategic vision for adoption and workforce readiness.
Promote advanced risk modeling tools, digital transformation, and cybersecurity initiatives.
Provide leadership in regulatory and voluntary standards development, including international coordination.
Represent EXRR in high-level meetings with government, industry, and global stakeholders.
Establish and evaluate operational policies, allocate resources, and oversee performance management programs.
Manage day-to-day operations through subordinate SES leaders, ensuring accountability and alignment with CPSC priorities.

This is a Public Trust Position. Employment in this position requires a background investigation. One-year probationary period required for initial SES appointment.
The selectee will be required to complete a "Declaration of Federal Employment", (OF-306), prior to appointment and the appropriate background investigation forms to determine suitability for Federal employment. False statements or responses on these forms can jeopardize your employment opportunity and subject you to disciplinary action, including removal from Federal service.
The selectee will be required to complete a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the I-9 Form. We will compare information provided on the I-9 Form to records available from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. There is NO requirement to prepare a narrative statement specifically addressing the Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) or the Technical Qualifications (TQs).
TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS (TQs): Your resume should demonstrate accomplishments that would satisfy the technical qualifications.
Expertise in consumer product safety, risk reduction, and compliance oversight.
Experience implementing advanced technologies (AI/ML, data analytics) in safety programs.
Proven ability to lead strategic initiatives and manage complex, multi-disciplinary operations.
EXECUTIVE CORE QUALIFICATIONS (ECQs): In addition to the Technical Qualification Requirements listed above, all new entrants into the Senior Executive Service (SES) under a career appointment will be assessed for executive competency against the following five mandatory ECQs. If your 2-page resume does not reflect demonstrated evidence of the ECQs and TQs, you may not receive further consideration for the position.
There are five ECQs:
ECQ 1: Commitment to the Rule of Law and the Principles of the American Founding – This core qualification requires a demonstrated knowledge of the American system of government, commitment to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law, and commitment to serve the American people.
ECQ 2: Driving Efficiency -This core qualification involves the demonstrated ability to strategically and efficiently manage resources, budget effectively, cut wasteful spending, and pursue efficiency through process and technological upgrades.
ECQ 3: Merit and Competence - This core qualification involves the demonstrated knowledge, ability and technical competence to effectively and reliably produce work that is of exceptional quality.
ECQ 4: Leading People - This core qualification involves the demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a group toward meeting the organization’s vision, mission, and goals, and to drive a high-performance, high-accountability culture. This includes, when necessary, the ability to lead people through change and to hold individuals accountable.
ECQ 5: Achieving Results - This core qualification involves the demonstrated ability to achieve both individual and organizational results, and to align results to stated goals from superiors.
Note: If you are a member of the SES or have been certified through successful participation in an OPM approved SES Candidate Development Program (SESCDP), or have SES reinstatement eligibility, you do not need to respond to the ECQs. Instead, you should attach proof (e.g., SF-50, Certification by OPM’s SES Qualifications Review Board (QRB)) of your eligibility for noncompetitive appointment to the SES.
A bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in chemistry, biology, or engineering is preferred.
Education
This position does not have a mandatory education requirement.
