The Position

Roche Sequencing Solutions, Inc. seeks a Principal Data Scientist in its Santa Clara, California location.

Within global biotechnology company collaborate with scientists to understand how sequencing system sub-components interact and sequencing data analysis needs. Write programs and scripts to improve ability to analyze sequencing data, including coding and coding optimization. Develop and implement algorithms for genomic data mining, analysis, and to quantify sequencing performance. Document technical work as part of the product development process. Develop and implement algorithms to classify the raw voltage readings generated by the sequencer into DNA basecalls. Create signal processing, machine learning and deep learning algorithms to identify and remove noise from the raw voltage data coming from the sequencer. Develop and implement parameter inference routines to estimate the kinetic behavior of the sequencer. This information will be shared with the scientists to help improve the sequencer. Develop mathematical models of the sequencer, implement them and run simulations to help understand the hidden states, associated problems and help to improve them. Use statistical tools to understand system characteristics and their impact on performance. Validate software tools, debug code, provide root cause analysis, and work with software developers on fixing the problems. May telecommute up to 4 days per week. May supervise 0-3 data scientists.

Education and experience required: PhD degree in Data Science, Engineering, Physics, or related field.

Alternative education and experience required: Master's degree in Data Science, Engineering, Physics, or related field plus three (3) years of experience as a Data Scientist, Data Research Assistant or Analyst, or related role.

Special Requirements: Must have the following skills from academic or industry:

• Python, including implementing algorithms for research
• Machine learning (supervised and unsupervised) and deep learning, including using neural network based algorithms for data analysis
• Use of statistical tests and techniques to study physical systems
• Numerical methods and simulations
• Scikit-learn and Tensorflow libraries

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position of California is $189,624 to $250,000 per year. Actual pay within the range will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
