Duties
Performs serials check-in using the Integrated Library System) (ILS).
Routes work to catalogers following established guidelines.
Creates preliminary-level cataloging records in the ILS using a template and basic knowledge of national cataloging standards and local practices.
Creates order records in the Integrated Library System (ILS) using agency documentation and following established guidelines.
Processes incoming mail searches the Integrated Library System (ILS) for matching records and closes order records as needed.

Selectee may be required to serve a one year probationary period
Selectee must be able to submit to a background investigation for Suitability.
This position requires you to successfully pass a drug test prior to appointment.
The work requires occasional moderate physical exertion such as bending, reaching, pushing book trucks and lifting of moderate to heavy boxes containing books, DVDs, CDs, maps, etc.
The work is performed in an office setting primarily associated with libraries and offices and involves occasional pick-ups and deliveries to the warehouse/delivery section.
Qualifications
To qualify for the Library Technician, PG -1411-7, you must meet the following requirements:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Applicant must possess specialized experience at the next lower grade level (PG-06) in federal service: Specialized experience may include
1) Following library regulations, procedures, and policies related to one or more library functions or specializations (acquisitions, cataloging, digitization, etc.); AND
2) Using integrated library systems and other bibliographic databases to accurately search for publications, match publications to bibliographic information, identify duplicate or versions of publications, and create preliminary bibliographic and order records; AND
3) Interpreting detailed library information from various internal and external systems to provide accurate information for research, responding to inquiries, and other library tasks.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement(04/21/2026) to be considered.
Education
Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience may not be used for this grade level.

Background Investigation:
To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy; this position requires a background investigation for Suitability. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully complete a background check for Suitability. This review could include fingerprints and credit checks, as well as a full field FBI background investigation and tax and bar checks for attorney applicants. The background investigation covers a period of seven to ten years depending on the nature of the position; this process may take 6 weeks or longer. The Agency may rescind the tentative offer, if the candidate is unable to pass the background investigation.
