Summary This position is Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) and will be assigned to the Fitness Center at JBSA Fort Sam Houston. This is a Regular category position with guaranteed 35 hours, may work up to 40 hrs./wk. Scheduled as needed. Employees appointed to a Regular category position are eligible for benefits. Learn more about this agency Duties Distributes and balances workload in accordance with established directives. Ensures timely accomplishment of work assignments and other duties assigned. Maintains awareness of status and progress and makes day-to-day adjustments based on established priorities. Instructs lower graded lifeguards/swim instructors in specific tasks, procedures, and techniques, makes available written instructions, material, and supplies. Gives on-the-job training and certification to new employees. Checks on work in progress and reviews completed work to see that supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Attempts to resolve informal complaints and refers others to supervisor. Reports to supervisor on employee performance, progress, and training needs and on disciplinary problems. Assists with and independently organizes/schedules employees, program events, materials, records and reports for multiple aquatic facilities. Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning, renders first aid to injuries, and monitors activities within fitness center and swimming pool areas. Uses a variety of techniques such as artificial respiration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and first aid. Notifies emergency medical services (EMS) and/or other appropriate personnel for more serious accidents/injuries. Keeps detailed records, and trains personnel in appropriate documentation procedures. Observes the condition and behavior of swimmers to ascertain any potential problems. Fosters good relationships with patrons. Demonstrates model behavior to employees with rule enforcement, customer relations, and emergency response. Assists with establishment of safety policies and procedures, and provides guidance to employees as requested by Aquatics Director. Oversees swim lesson program to ensure quality and consistency of Water Safety Instruction across the program. As required, provides lessons, providing demonstrations of various techniques in prescribed lesson plan. As senior Water Safety Instructor provides guidance to instructors concerning lessons, lesson planning, techniques, and materials. Trains staff and educates customers on swim lesson policies and procedures. Keeps detailed records and reports of swim lesson program and usage and assists with development of monthly swim lesson schedule and rosters for multiple aquatic facilities. Checks pool water chemistry according to established schedules and instructions (e.g., temperature, chlorine, pH, etc.) and documents/reports findings. Opens and inspects facilities at the beginning of the day and closes and secures facilities at the end of the day. Reports equipment/ facilities problems to appropriate personnel. Maintains records and complies data for supervisor related to chemical consistencies of pool water and required supply usages. Trains and certifies all facility staff in required credentials, monitors training needs within multiple aquatic/fitness facilities, and coordinates with Aquatics Director and the American Red cross to maintain certifications of all personnel. As Lifeguard Instructor trains and certifies all fitness center staff in required credentials: Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED; trains and certifies all aquatics staff in required credentials: Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. This position requires pre-employment screening for swimming ability, rescue skills, and CPR skills. This position has physical lifting requirement which requires the incumbent to complete a favorable pre-employment physical. Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs unassisted and 100 lbs assisted. This position has been identified as a Test Designated Position (TDP). The incumbent of this position will be subject to and must consent to a pre-employment and random drug testing. Must have a valid driver's license. Qualifications Who May Apply: Open to everyone. Qualifying Experience: Must have experience in operating a computer. Must be able to demonstrate prior lifeguard experience. Must possess current certification in the following; lifesaving, first aid, CPR, water safety instruction (WSI), lifeguard instruction. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1.Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, organize data and reports regarding multiple aspects of operation such as patron, swim lesson, military training usage, etc. 2. Demonstrate current physical ability to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups up to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants. 3. Ability to orient lower graded employees, distribute/balance work assignments, and monitor work accomplishment. **NOTE: Those qualified applicants who meet both the minimum qualification requirement(s) and highly preferred criteria(s) will be considered best qualified for this position and will be referred to the selecting official(s) first for consideration.
