Maintenance Work Leader

Summary A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. Duties Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately July to December, and you will be in a non-pay status (January-July) for the remainder of the year. Incumbent is the Maintenance Work Leader who has overall responsibility for the day-to-day, hands-on, operation of the park routine maintenance and janitorial program. Provides technical leadership and assumes full responsibility for the safe and cleanliness and maintenance of facilities serving. Establishes priority of work, assigns work, oversees work, and inspects work of employees at Great Island Cabin Camp. Ensures employees complete work in safe and effective manner. Typical work includes, cleaning cabins following visitor use, monitoring and replenishing propane tanks that service individual cabins, overseeing the water treatment facility as per NCDEQ standards, monitoring and replenishing diesel and gasoline tanks that provide fuel to the visiting public, ensuring the camp generators provide electricity to the camp, completing routine repairs to cabins, internal appliances, light fixtures, simple plumbing systems, etc. Ensures all work at the cabin camp is performed in a safe manner and that employees use proper PPE, techniques, & procedures while completing assignments. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime work. You must possess and maintain a C-Well water sampling/testing by EOD. You must possess and maintain a current National Park Service (NPS), Motorboat Operator Certificate (MOCC) by EOD. You may be required to travel occasional overnight at least 2 nights away from home. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Physical Demands: The incumbent must be in good physical condition, able to work on ladders, scaffolds, and platforms. Incumbent operates tractors, ATV's, UTV's, and boats in all types of terrain (steep and level) and in adverse weather conditions. Incumbent must be able to do moderate lifting (40 pounds), stoop, bend, climb, and work in cramped positions. Incumbent will frequently walk, stand, bend, twist, push, pull, lift overhead, and work in awkward positions as required. Working Conditions: The incumbent will report to their primary work location at Harkers Island, NC and travel 8 miles (one-way) across open water to Great Island (GI) and South Core Banks (SCB) which are both part of Cape Lookout National Seashore. GI and SCB are remotely located with no readily available medical services and no ability to purchase food or supplies. The area consists of harsh conditions with no climate-controlled areas during summer and winter when temperatures can range between 15 and 100 degrees. Additionally, the incumbent will be exposed to blowing sand, direct sun, rain, salt spray, and biting insects such as mosquitoes, horseflies, blackflies, and spiders.
