Job Description
AI ReporterÂ
Fortune is seeking two experienced, enterprising, well-sourced reporters to supercharge our coverage of artificial intelligence. Â
We’re looking for journalists who are fascinated by the way Big Tech and startups are racing to build AI products and how large corporations everywhere are using AI to gain a competitive edge—rewriting the rules of business and reshaping society in the process. This story has never been more important, and telling it correctly means getting inside the companies, understanding the leaders, and identifying (and breaking) news and trends that aren’t in the press releases.Â
The ideal candidates are self-starters who are excited by the opportunity to be part of a team where they can have an immediate impact on our coverage and on the news cycle. A knack for developing sources and finding fresh, diverse perspectives is a must. Â
Applicants should be motivated by scoops and industry-leading reporting that gets the power players in tech and business talking. Stylish writers capable of explaining complex topics in ways that will excite and engage readers preferred.Â
You must have at least three years’ professional reporting experience to be considered. This is not a role for an AI enthusiast who is not a journalist. We are open to one of the roles being more junior and the other more senior in terms of experience and expertise.Â
You will...Â
- Report and write a mix of original stories about AI, from quick-turnaround pieces and scoops to richly reported features and analysisÂ
- Develop your own angles to cover within the AI sector, and become an authoritative, must-read reporter covering those anglesÂ
- Generate story ideas through source relationships, shoe-leather reporting, and smart, public documents and data researchÂ
- Participate in Fortune events and conferences, and occasionally write for the print magazineÂ
- Uphold Fortune’s standards of journalistic rigor, accuracy, fairness, and qualityÂ
Â
The right candidate:Â
- Has experience covering business news as a beat reporterÂ
- Prior experience covering AI and tech preferredÂ
- Is highly motivated to break news and “get the story,” and responds to reporting obstacles as energizing challenges to be overcome rather than roadblocksÂ
- Has a proven ability to develop sources inside and outside companiesÂ
- Has strong writing chops and is adept at writing in various story formats and stylesÂ
- Is an inherently curious and willing to learn on the goÂ
- Has experience in online publishing, SEO, and social mediaÂ
Â
Location: Our editorial team is based across time zones and international borders. This role can be based in the US or Europe, with a preference for San Francisco. If you’re based within commuting distance of one of our offices, there will be a minimum of 3 days/week in the office.Â
Fortune’s perks and benefits include:Â
- 22 vacation days, 11 paid holidays and an honor-based sick leave policyÂ
- Health, dental, and vision, coverage (90% paid for individuals and families), plus a high-deductible health plan option where Fortune contributes to a Health Savings Account (HSA) and a mental-health benefitÂ
- 401(k) planÂ
- Generous parental leaveÂ
- Dependent care/health care/commuter FSAs, and cell phone benefitsÂ
- Tuition reimbursement program and other professional development resourcesÂ
- An array of cultural initiatives including Employee Resource Groups and a mentorship programÂ
- A commitment to an open, inclusive, and diverse work cultureÂ
Â
