Job Summary

This position performs analytical and accounting tasks in the SCS Fuel Accounting department. Responsibilities include the accurate accounting and reporting of natural gas commodity and hedging transactions for the Southern Company regulated operating companies, as well as Southern Power Company.

Primary Job Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed month-end gas cost estimates for the regulated operating companies and Southern Power Company
• Perform monthly financial closing processes for operating companies and SCS accurately and timely
• Verify, reconcile, and approve invoices for gas purchase, transportation, and hedging settlements
• Maintaining gas cost information for review, analysis, and reporting purposes
• Reconcile and balance gas volumes with various pipeline measurement statements
• Interface with Middle Office and Front Office to ensure integrity of accounting and exposure data
• Perform accounting tasks in compliance with GAAP and Sarbanes/Oxley requirements

Educational Requirements

• BS/BA degree with major or concentration in Accounting is required
• Advanced degree or certification a plus

Experience, Knowledge, & Skills

• Specific experience in gas accounting is desired
• General competency in the natural gas industry from wellhead to burner tip including operational and financial aspects is also desired.
• Understanding of GAAP, FERC, SEC and other applicable rules, regulations, and reporting requirements, as well as, Southern Company policies and guidelines
• Knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley compliance requirements
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent commitment to accuracy and details
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to self-direct and manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and build working relationships
• Microsoft Excel proficiency
• Knowledge of Oracle Cloud ERP is preferred
• Effective written and oral communication skills
