Acoustics Engineer - Staff Scientist
Job Description
Boom Supersonic is transforming air travel with Overture, the world’s fastest airliner — optimized for speed, safety, and sustainability. Serving both civil and government markets, Overture will fly at twice the speed of today’s airliners and is designed to run on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Boom’s vision is to bring families, businesses, and cultures closer together through supersonic travel and make the world dramatically more accessible.Â
Are you passionate about building the supersonic future? Come join the team and help us make aviation history!
Role OverviewBoom Supersonic is seeking an Acoustic Engineer - Staff Scientist with an extensive background in the prediction and validation of landing and take-off (LTO) noise levels for commercial aircraft. In particular, the Acoustics Engineer - Staff Scientist must have working knowledge of noise generation mechanisms within turbofan engines, associated low and high fidelity methods/modeling needed for noise predictions, and be familiar with various noise mitigation design concepts and noise abatement flight procedures.Â
The Acoustics Engineer - Staff Scientist will work closely with various internal groups and engine partners to identify and guide engine and aircraft design from an environmental noise perspective. Detailed acoustic predictions of the engines will be merged with other data to estimate noise certification levels and the associated community noise footprint for the Overture aircraft. This individual will also collaborate with the policy team and support the ICAO CAEP Working Group 1 efforts to provide accurate and relevant technical data to inform future regulations.
A typical day might include- Develop and maintain models for various noise generating mechanisms
- Conduct acoustic analysis and trade studies and provide recommendations to help guide aircraft and engine design and integration
- Develop acoustic models and/or simulations to provide greater understanding of noise generating mechanismsÂ
- Collaborate with Overture Design team members (Aerodynamics, Propulsion, and Systems Engineers), and advise on acoustic considerations
- Provide environmental noise guidance and noise certification considerations for policy and regulatory discussions
- Maintain aircraft level acoustic predictions with desired noise margins
- Maintain/improve low order methods for modeling engine and airframe noise to support aircraft level acoustic predictions
- Consult with Preliminary Design on future Boom product lines
- Create high fidelity modeling of noise sources for acoustic predictions that will guide aircraft and engine design decisions
- Identify critical noise generating mechanisms, including turbofan engine components
- Work closely with aircraft and engine designers to establish acoustic sensitivities, identify areas of interest, and provide guidance for engine design from an acoustic perspective
- Research existing technologies or develop new approaches to optimize acoustic performance
- Operate simulation tools, and/or advise others in the operation of those tools, that produce acoustics data; ensure proper validation and interpretation of the results
- Perform acoustic analyses (source data coming from either simulation or experiment) on aircraft systems and components, including building analysis tools and scripts
- Engage with the policy team to support international rulemaking activities and public outreach/education
- Support aeroacoustic wind tunnel planning, test execution and post-test analysis for comparison to computational predictions
- Travel may be required, up to 10%
- Master's degree in Engineering, Physics or related field with at least 15+ years of experience
- Experience with computational acoustic analysis techniques
- Experience with generating and assessing airport noise contours, preferably using the FAA’s Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT)
- Experience with aeroacoustics with emphasis on airframe and engine noise and the relationships to aerodynamic acoustic analogies
- Understanding of acoustic treatment practices, with an emphasis on engine noise reduction best practices
- Understanding of how aircraft takeoff and landing performance impacts environmental noise levels
- Experience in validation of analysis results against other sources, such as test data, previously published literature, and theoretical source models
- Experience with testing standards, instrumentation, signal conditioning, verifying boundary & environmental conditions
- Computer programming skills, with experience in MATLAB and Python
- Effective communication skills and collaborative mindset
- PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Acoustics, or related field.Â
- Experience with ANOPP (or ANOPP2)
- Prior experience in the certification process for aircraft noise, and current DER status is highly desired
- Present or prior involvement in ICAO CAEP Working Group 1 (Aircraft Noise)
- Knowledge of current state-of-the-art acoustic technologies and technologies under development
- Experience with wind tunnel testing
- Experience in a leadership role on at least one aircraft program from initial concept through flight test and type certification
The Base Salary Range for this position is $187,000 - $253,000. Actual salaries will vary based on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Boom’s total rewards package for employees. Other rewards may include performance bonuses, long term incentives/equity, an open PTO policy, and many other progressive benefits.
To conform to U.S. Government aerospace technology export regulations (ITAR and EAR), applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
