Overview of the Position

This position is a key role within the Actuarial Reserving department, supporting the General Liability and Excess/Umbrella lines of business. The position manages two direct reports, primarily responsible for the quarterly reserve review process with ownership and responsibility for several lines across Small & MLC, specifically Small Commercial GL, Guaranteed Cost Construction, and MLC Programs. In addition, the role will be involved in various cross-team and individual projects, including claim analytics, leveraging existing diagnostic & monitoring tools to research changing trends, and enhancing our reserving capabilities by creating new tools and methodologies.

The position will partner with various business units and work directly with the claims organization to be a leading source of knowledge on our General Liability and Umbrella lines. The individual should have technical and analytical skills, be able to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences and be able to influence business partners.

Responsibilities
  • Lead quarterly reserve reviews and monthly monitoring for various General Liability and Umbrella reserve lines, specifically Small Commercial GL, Guaranteed Cost Construction, Construction Defect, and MLC Programs
  • Develop new analytic tools and enhance current tools to improve the accuracy and efficiency of reserve reviews and claims analytics
  • Become an expert regarding emerging internal & external trends in GL and Umbrella loss experience (e.g., COVID, Social Inflation), changes within claims operations, and underwriting trends
  • Share knowledge across the broader Reserving team
  • Support the frequent ad hoc requests for GL and Umbrella insights and analysis
  • Conduct sophisticated actuarial analyses and effectively communicate findings and recommendations to business partners
  • Drive and enhance the partnership between Actuarial, Claims, and the business functions; collaborate with pricing and claims analytic partners to understand changes in loss and claim trends
  • Manage, coach, and develop two direct reports, including accountability for their performance and professional development.

Experience & Skills
  • FCAS or career ACAS with 5+ years of experience; past or current experience in reserving preferred
  • Management experience preferred, but not required
  • Technical and data skills; must be proficient in Excel and able to learn new software tools such as R, ResQ, TM1 etc.
  • Thought leadership; demonstrate analytical skills and offer creative solutions to business questions; exhibit a process efficiency/improvement mindset
  • Demonstration of written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to audiences of various levels and diverse technical backgrounds.
  • Experience in developing strong working relationships and the ability to interact with and influence our business partners
  • Project management and teamwork skills including ability to effectively collaborate with individuals at different organizational levels; flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing priorities
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented with the ability to manage time effectively by prioritizing and delegating in an environment with multiple priorities.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$136,000 - $177,000
