Summary

This position is located in an Area Office, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The primary purpose of the position is to serve as an assistant for clerical and administrative activities pertaining to correspondence, budget, purchasing, human resources, timekeeping, travel, and related administrative areas for as Area Office.

  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Subject to one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period unless prior service is creditable. New USDA supervisors must successfully complete all components of the required training program before the end of their probationary period.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

A minimum 40 words per minute typing skill is required.

Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-05 level, you must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level or higher in Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. This experience must include experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. For this position, specialized experience is defined as:
  • Providing a variety of administrative and technical support relating to personnel, procurement, budget and/or general administrative management;
OR
Substitution of education for the GS-05 level:Completion of 4 years of education above high school level leading to a bachelor's degree;
OR
Combination of Education and Experience for the GS-05 level: Completion of a combination of education and experience, as described above (combination of education and specialized experience which equals at least 100% as outlined in the OPM qualifications policy). This combination has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge and/or experience to successfully perform the duties of this position. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-07 level,you must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level or higher in Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. This experience must include experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. For this position, specialized experience is defined as:
  • Providing a variety of administrative and technical support relating to personnel, procurement, budget and/or general administrative management, AND;
  • Organizing travel and meeting arrangements for management officials and program staff.

NOTE: There is no substitution of education at the GS-06 grade level.

  • Physical Demands: The work places no special physical demands on the employee. The work is typic ally sedentary and requires some walking, bending, standing and carrying of light items such as paper and books. Normal precautions must be taken for extended use of computer terminals.
  • Work Environment: The work is performed primarily in a typical office setting and involves the normal risks and discomforts of an office.

  • This position is eligible for telework within the local commuting area of the position and other flexible work arrangements.
