Office of the Senior Managing Director

The Senior Managing Director (SMD) key mandate includes overseeing the Bank's knowledge and partnership programs and ensuring that the Bank's analytical work continues to meet the needs of client countries and global partners. The office is co-responsible for the Evolution Roadmap, G20 and G7 engagements, as well as co-chairing IDA. It guides the WB's global knowledge and IDA corporate commitments, it oversees key partnerships with shareholders, development agencies, other MDBs and academia; it helps shape and drive the Bank's strategic directions; and -through the GP TF portfolio - builds support and mobilizes financial resources across the international community for bringing concessionally to our work.

The office is currently staffed by the Director, Strategy & Operations (DSO), Portfolio Assistants, a Special Assistant and ACS staff.

The Adviser will report directly to the DSO and will have the following responsibilities:

Duties and Accountabilities:

- Contribute to briefings for Senior Management on a broad range of economic policy and development topics, including knowledge, data and Ai, digital transformation, and finance.

- Conduct analysis, research and outreach on issues related to the topics above

- Conduct reviews of strategic and policy papers, providing guidance to the SMD on diverse topics for a broad range of operational, strategic and policy issues across a wide portfolio.

- Lead and liaise with other units in the preparation of background information for policy papers, briefings, minutes, talking points and background materials for the team.

- Foster synergies and partnerships with other units particularly EXC and MDO on cross-cutting work streams including knowledge, data and Ai, digital transformation finance and macroeconomic issues.

- Support the SMD in thematic dialogues with senior management, external counterparts and other shareholders' representatives.

- Undertake other ad hoc activities and initiatives as assigned by the DSO to meet SMD's business needs.

Selection Criteria

• Advanced degree in a relevant discipline (Masters or PhD), and at least 15 years of relevant professional experience.
• Demonstrated understanding of Bank's approach to development finance.
• Strong analytical skills in economic and/or finance and proven ability to conduct policy-relevant research.
• Broad and in-depth experience working with senior management and senior shareholders/representatives.
• Outstanding interpersonal, diplomatic and partnership skills and proven ability to work in a collaborative environment with team members and across organizational boundaries to build alliances for results.
• High ethical standards, deep sense of fairness and strong degree of tact, judgment, and diplomacy.
• A strong, persuasive, and clear communicator, with excellent writing and oral skills.
