What you will Do
Under general supervision, this person is responsible for development and deployment methods to diagnose and assess the capability of the battery. This comprises the development, improvement and deployment of methods to determine battery state variable critical to the seamless operation of the battery in the considered application and development of control strategies to ensure optimized operation of the battery.
This person must understand the performance demands of vehicles power nets. This person must be self-motivated and demonstrate a track record of academic research, either in an academic, industrial, or national laboratory setting.
Key Duties & Functional Objectives:
- Battery Systems Modeling and Control Algorithm Development
- Modeling of Battery System Behavior
- Development of advanced control algorithms
- Development and maintenance of system control strategy modeling and development framework
How you will do it:
Advanced Battery Diagnostics and Control Algorithm Development
- Develop and optimize control strategies and algorithms for State of Charge, State of Health, State of Function and thermal Management for batteries of various electrochemistry, primarily Lithium ion
- Provide and validate the calibrations for the control algorithms
- Optimize control strategies for existing battery types, and adapt control strategies for new battery types and new applications for automotive and adjacent markets use purpose
- Adapt customer specific requirements including function safety requirements
- Evaluate advanced systems modeling concepts and create novel strategies and algorithms leveraging external and internal collaborations
- Develop IP strategy and support external communication of battery control strategies
Advanced Battery Control Algorithm Implementation
- Reduce the complexity of the algorithms to cope with limited system resources
- Work with a cross functional engineering team to develop comprehensive test plans to validate algorithms and control strategies.
- Quantify the control algorithm improvements using statistical data analysis as well as electrochemical and thermal modeling.
- Perform root cause and failure analysis for control algorithm implementation issues
- Support design reviews and provide input to technical program reviews
Development and Maintenance of Systems Modeling Framework
- Evaluate and determine systems modeling and simulation framework and tool chains to develop efficient control algorithms, aging models, and advanced diagnostics
- Lead the analysis of system level test data for advanced BMS algorithm validation
- Decompose system requirements to multiple functional and component requirements.
- Manage system modeling documentation and process to ensure a sensible archive of development information while ensure an agile advanced algorithm development and implementation
What we look for
- Master's Degree or PhD in a quantitative discipline; including Controls, Mathematics (Statistics), Electro-Chemical Engineering, Physics
- Previous experience (*graduate or undergraduate) in both science/engineering is preferred
- Minimum of 4-5 years (Master) or 3+ years (PhD) of experience in technical industry
- High level of experience in the optimization algorithms and numerical analysis
- High level of experience in math work or equivalent software coding
- Experience in thermal behavior of technical, ideally electrochemical systems
- Proficient data regression techniques and statistical analysis
- Demonstrated track record of project or personnel leadership is preferred
- Excellent communication and presentation skills are required
- Ability to travel up to 15%, including international travel
Preferred:
- Good level of understanding of batteries' operation in a vehicle
- Experience in battery Multiphysics modeling
- Experience in battery test protocol development and performance validation
- High level of experience in control theory: Kalman filters or nonlinear model predictive controls
