Global Trade Associate
Overview:
The Global Trade Associate is responsible for compliance related to the import and export of goods and services across international borders. This position requires a good understanding of global trade regulations, customs compliance, and international trade agreements. The Global Trade Associate must be able to navigate regulatory environments to ensure that the company's global trade activities are conducted in a compliant, ethical, and timely manner.
Key Responsibilities:
- Actively support the company's export activities, including tariff classification, product control review and licensing setup in Ciena’s Global Trade Management system
- Work with internal stakeholders where authorization or licenses are required to ensure compliance on international shipments
- Draft authorization or license applications and interface with gov’t agencies or service providers to submit.
- Ensure compliance to global trade policies and procedures with all applicable laws and regulations in various jurisdictions globally
- Monitor and analyze changes in global trade regulations and advise management on the potential impact on the company's operations and systems
- Generate periodic reports for various jurisdictions
- Provide guidance and support to internal teams on global trade issues, including trade agreements, sanctions, and embargoes
- Maintain relationships with government agencies, and other external partners to ensure smooth and efficient global trade operations
- Conduct daily reviews and assess risk related to Ciena’s global trade activities to identify potential areas of non-compliance and implement corrective actions as necessary
- Lead special projects related to global trade, such as the implementation of new trade agreements or the development of new import/export programs
- Document and report findings
- Conduct training sessions for employees on global trade compliance and best practices
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in international business, supply chain management, or a related field
- 3+ years of experience in global trade compliance or a related field with heavy focus on export compliance
- In-depth knowledge of global trade regulations, including customs laws, trade agreements, and sanctions
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate complex legal and regulatory environments
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex trade concepts to both internal and external stakeholders
- Practical experience working with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and other external partners
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other trade-related software applications (i.e., Oracle GTM)
- Professional certifications in global trade compliance, such as Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) or Certified Export Specialist (CES), or Brokerage License are preferred

The successful candidate will have a good understanding of global trade regulations and the ability to navigate regulatory environments. They will also have strong communication, analytical, and organization skills, as well as a commitment to ethical and compliant business practices.
