Analytical Linguist Intern
Job Description
We believe this balanced, flexible approach gives our team members the best of both worlds: plenty of focus time along with in-person collaboration that fosters trust, unlocks creativity, and further fuels innovation.
Grammarly team members in this role must be based in the United States or Canada.
The opportunity
Grammarly empowers people to thrive and connect whenever and wherever they communicate. Every day, over 30 million people and 50,000 teams around the world rely on our AI-powered communication assistance technology. All of this begins with our team collaborating in a values-driven and learning-oriented environment.
To achieve our ambitious goals, we're looking for a motivated Ph.D. student to work with our Language Research team in the USA or Canada for three months in 2023. The internship has flexible start dates in the summer of 2023. We seek students who, ideally, are in the latter half of their Ph.D. program and have a strong foundation in linguistic research and analysis, with good exposure to natural language processing and the conceptual fundamentals of machine learning.
Our team works on several challenging problems, such as writing assistance, text generation, summarization, anonymization, threaded communication, and others. The Analytical Linguist intern may participate in research and engineering efforts related to these areas. Some of the intern's work may include developing ontologies; conducting quality control analyses; detecting linguistic patterns in false positives to help define areas of improvement; or contributing scripts to the team's codebase for process refinement, data preparation, quality assessment, and annotation workflow management.
Grammarly's engineers and researchers have the freedom to innovate and uncover breakthroughs-and, in turn, influence our product roadmap. The complexity of our technical challenges is growing rapidly as we scale our interfaces, algorithms, and infrastructure. Read more about it on our technical blog .
Your impact
The Language Research team conducts research and supports the development of a wide range of experimental and released product features. Grammarly's users represent a diverse group of English language users. Their linguistic expression varies inherently and with the context in which they're writing or reading. Our team seeks to better understand those specific use cases while providing consistent, high-quality communication assistance as widely as possible.
As an intern in Language Research at Grammarly, you will work closely with your mentor and other linguists, software and machine learning engineers, and research scientists to explore the frontiers of language data pipelines, high-quality linguistic analysis, and natural language processing according to a defined research agenda.
In this role, you'll apply your knowledge and learn new skills to help improve our tooling and analysis pipelines and writing assistance systems. You'll conduct research that ultimately contributes to the next generation of communication assistance tools. You will also have the opportunity to design and implement experiments to test ideas related to language data management, augmentation, or analysis. These could relate to annotation quality and efficiency, topic and metadata extrapolation, anonymization, inclusivity enrichment, summarization, paraphrasing, sentiment and tone analysis, register or stylistic variation, etc. You may have an opportunity to collaborate on high-quality research papers destined for top conferences.
We're looking for someone who
- Embodies our EAGER values-is ethical, adaptable, gritty, empathetic, and remarkable.
- Has a passion for linguistics and delivering high-quality datasets and analyses to stakeholders.
- Is skilled at creative thinking.
- Is in the process of completing a Ph.D. in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, English (with significant scripting/programming background), Computer Science (with language/NLP focus and a previous degree in linguistics), or a similar academic area.
- Has experience solving analytical problems using automated, quantitative approaches
- Has demonstrated knowledge of Python.
- Is familiar with concepts from the fields of NLP, machine learning, or deep learning.
- Has research and software engineering experience demonstrated via grants, fellowships, coursework, internships, work experience, or coding competitions.
- Is interested in publishing work in peer-reviewed conference proceedings (e.g., LSA, ACL, NAACL, ICASSP, INTERSPEECH, or similar).
Support for you, professionally and personally
- Professional growth: We hire people we trust and give team members autonomy to do their best work. We also support professional development with training, coaching, and regular feedback.
- A connected team: Grammarly builds a product that helps people connect, and we apply this mindset to our own team. We have a highly collaborative culture supported by our EAGER values. We also take time to celebrate our colleagues and accomplishments with global, local, and team-specific events and programs.
