API Engineer- Geospatial

Guidewire is searching for an API Engineer with experience designing, architecting, building, and maintaining a geospatial API (specifically geospatial data). As a Geospatial API Engineer, you will be responsible for the engineering behind our HazardHub API, the most comprehensive set of property risk data, casualty risk data, and hazard risk scoring in the P&C insurance industry. You’ll join a team of talented front-end, back-end, and security engineers to provide technical leadership while taking a key part in strategic API, middle-tier, and database technology architectural and solution decisions. You will be responsible for configuration, platform operations, and troubleshooting of API products.

You must have strong knowledge of API best practices, architecture, and strategy, as well as the ability to write code and build the API.

Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and maintain geospatial APIs that serve our Hazard data
• Collaborate with GIS analysts and Product teams to define API requirements
• Write application code as well as Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to participate in all stages of API development, from prototype to production
• Maintain existing codebases in languages like Python, Scala, and Ruby, and help drive technology choices in the future
• Build stable, scalable, and efficient backend services
• Work with data partners and third-party APIs to integrate their offerings into our own APIs
• Conduct code reviews and work with peers to grow the team’s skills
• Monitor API performance and troubleshoot issues 
• Stay updated on API development trends and emerging technologies
• Ensure API security and authentication mechanisms are robust
• Build software deployment pipelines using CI/CD best practices

Requirements:

• BS in Computer Science or related field.
• Strong working knowledge of current API best practices, architectures, integration styles, technologies, and platforms.
• 8+ years of experience with enterprise-level APIs
• Hands-on experience with back-end and front-end languages like Python, Ruby, JavaScript, or Scala.
• Experience with AWS cloud services like EC2, EKS, and S3
• Proficiency with web services (REST, OpenAPI)
• Proficiency with SQL, with a heavy emphasis on PostgreSQL/PostGIS
• Experience with containerized environments like EKS
• Demonstrated ability to identify and adopt new technologies as well as the correct places to maintain current standards
• Familiarity with risk models and other data constructs in the insurance industry is a plus.
