Job Description

Department: Advanced Engineering (for the products of tomorrow!)

Focus Area: Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Safety, Sensing, Logic, and Power Control Products

Rockwell works within a hybrid environment. This individual will be required to sit onsite in either our Milwaukee, WI or Chelmsford, MA offices to allow for necessary in-person collaboration.

Role Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and innovative Firmware Communications Architect to join our Advanced Engineering team within the Product Business division, focusing on Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) for Safety, Sensing, Logic, and Power Control products. Reporting to the Manager of Advanced Engineering, the Firmware Communications Architect will be instrumental in the design and development of next-generation firmware and communication technologies that will revolutionize the industrial automation landscape. The successful candidate will be comfortable working with ambiguous requirements, guiding others to clear requirements, and driving business constraints and product delivery while considering power consumption, memory consumption, physical footprint constraints, or a combination of these factors.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, architect, and implement firmware and communication solutions for IIoT-enabled Safety, Sensing, Logic, and Power Control products, considering power, memory, and physical footprint constraints.
  • Develop and maintain firmware architecture specifications and documentation, ensuring compatibility with system and hardware requirements.
  • Design and implement robust communication protocols and interfaces to enable seamless integration of products into industrial networks.
  • Analyze and optimize firmware performance, ensuring adherence to real-time constraints and industry standards.
  • Evaluate new technologies, tools, and methodologies to improve firmware development processes and drive continuous innovation.
  • Able to create quick prototypes to de-risk technology risks.
  • Collaborate with product management and marketing teams to identify and capture customer requirements, translating them into technical specifications.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of learning and growth.
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute to the continuous improvement of products and processes.
  • Work comfortably with ambiguous requirements, guiding others to clear requirements and relying on physics-based constraints to drive business constraints and product delivery.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be able to work within the United States without sponsorship. Rockwell will not offer sponsorship for this role now or in the future.
  • Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Computer Science discipline
  • Ability to travel up to 10%

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of experience in embedded systems design and development, with a focus on firmware and communication protocols.
  • Proficient in C/C++ programming and experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS).
  • Deep understanding of communication technologies and protocols, such as Ethernet/IP, Modbus, PROFINET, MQTT, OPC-UA, or other IIoT-related technologies.
  • Experience with safety and security standards and practices for industrial automation products.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work on-site in Milwaukee or Katowice; this position is not remote.

What We Offer:

  • Health Insurance including Medical, Dental and Vision
  • 401k
  • Paid Time off
  • Parental and Caregiver Leave
  • Flexible Work Schedule where you will work with your manager to enjoy a work schedule that can be flexible with your personal life.
