Reporting directly to the Vice President of Accounting and Controller, the Assistant Controller is a trusted leader of the Accounting Team.  This role oversees all technical accounting responsibilities on a day-to-day basis while also helping guide the vision the grow and guide a developing team of accounting and finance professionals.  The Assistant Controller oversees the ongoing development of the accounting function and the maintenance of robust financial accounting records, systems, processes, controls and reports. The role is a mixture of hands-on detailed work (especially in areas of technical expertise such as revenue recognition) and team and people development

 Responsibilities

  • Oversees close on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Prepares all required financial reports, including those required by the SEC if and when the Company completes a successful public offering.
  • Is the primary contact for external auditors and tax advisors.
  • Supports the VP of Accounting and Controller during financings, including any that lead to a public offering.
  • Works with the FP&A team to analyze and communicate financial performance to executive and other management and the Board of Directors.
  • Performs, reviews, and communicates a variety of analyses, such as ratio performance, business unit reporting, budget variances and other ad hoc projects.
  • Supports the VP of Accounting and Controller on ad-hoc financial and accounting projects as requested.
  • Owns all technical accounting and reporting issues including SEC and SOX compliance.
  • Works with the VP of Accounting and Controller to analyze initial adoption of new standard and/or non-routine transactions.
  • Partners with Sales, Operations, and other departments, as appropriate, to solve relevant technical accounting issues and to develop policies and procedures around the company’s commercial operations.
  • Supports development of quarterly AC materials.
  • Support annual audit/quarterly review requests and inquiries from our external auditors.
  • Perform special projects, as required, to assist the department and the Company in achieving its goals and objectives.
  • Designs, documents, and implements procedures and controls readying the Company for post-IPO SOX 404 compliance.
  • Initially responsible for the general ledger, tax compliance, accounts receivable, equity and technical accounting functions within the Company.
  • Oversees and assists in the creation of process documentation for all key financial processes.
  • Develops the department’s usage of existing accounting systems including QAD and Concur.
  • Advises in the negotiation of customer terms and conditions as it relates to revenue recognition.
  • Evaluates all commercial business transactions for their revenue recognition impact.
  • Other duties may be assigned as appropriate given the evolving facts and circumstances of the Company.

Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field, or equivalent knowledge and experience.
  • 10 years of professional experience in an accounting position, with at least four at an audit firm.
  • Experience leading, mentoring and directly managing accounting professionals.  
  • Certified Public Accounting (CPA) license required
  • Possess a deep accounting technical skillset: knowledgeable in all of the typical accounting issues faced by a commercial, growth-stage Company.
  • Has a desire and capability to “own” the numbers
  • Has a genuine senior-level presence, being comfortable working closely with senior executives and presenting alongside the VP of Accounting as well as the CFO
  • Strong technical skills in GAAP and SOX 404.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Memo-writing and controls documentation will be a significant element of this role.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills required.
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines required.
  • Must have strong experience with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
