Assistant General Counsel

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced corporate/commercial attorney to join the SmartRent Legal team as Assistant General Counsel (“AGC”). This position will be performed in-person, located in our headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona.

As Assistant General Counsel, you will handle and manage a broad range of corporate and commercial matters, including commercial contracts, strategic partnerships, privacy matters, with additional generalist duties in litigation management, employment advice, corporate governance, SEC reporting, and other operational matters as necessary.  You will report directly to the General Counsel and will have frequent exposure to various senior leadership team members.  This is a unique opportunity to focus on public company corporate and commercial transactions with a leader in the rapidly-growing PropTech industry.

Responsibilities

• Partner with key decision-makers across the company to support SmartRent’s success in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
• Manage the overall commercial contracting process, including actively participating in the drafting, review, negotiation, approval, and reporting of commercial contracts and transactional agreements.
• Advise on commercial matters, including partnering with the business leadership to accelerate and streamline commercial agreements, and related policies and processes as needed.
• Participate in day-to-day corporate and commercial legal functions across the breadth of the enterprise, encompassing data privacy, litigation, intellectual property, and labor and employment matters.
• Provide guidance on corporate governance matters and relevant laws, rules and regulations, including SEC reporting and disclosure, compensation, and other public company matters.
• Help provide prompt legal advice to SmartRent’s business to facilitate, improve and strengthen operational decision-making through integration of legal analysis as part of the overall business development process.
• Build strong relationships and gain trust across the organization; use legal expertise, business savvy and sound reasoning to seek constructive and pragmatic solutions.
• Utilize legal technology and optimize processes to enhance department performance, productivity, and cost savings.
• Partner with the General Counsel in selecting, evaluating, and effectively managing outside legal counsel and vendors to meet budget.

Required Qualifications

• J.D. from an ABA accredited school and admission in good standing in at least one U.S. state bar jurisdiction.
• At least 5-10 years legal experience, with an emphasis in commercial contracting and transactional work. Public company in-house counsel experience is not necessary but preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, and meet demanding deadlines in a multi-faceted business, where demands and priorities change rapidly.
• Comfortable addressing novel legal issues and making decisions in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work independently while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams.
• Great personality, with ability to take the job seriously while still having fun.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Legal Tracker, Lexion, and Salesforce solutions
