Summary

The Assistant Hospital Housekeeping Officer position is located within the Environmental Management Service of the Clarksburg VA Medical Center. This program has a major impact on the well-being of patients, employees, and visitors by establishing the environmental health tone for the entire Medical Center.

Qualifications


To meet the minimum qualifications for this position at the GS- 11 level, you must meet one of the following:

Experience: You must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in the Federal service that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the Assistant Hospital Housekeeping Officer position. *Specialized Experience must also include experience in two or more of the following areas, or other work related to the Assistant Hospital Housekeeping Officer position:
  • Experience that demonstrated a practical working knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry, biology, and bacteriology as applied to environmental sanitation, infection control, and to the choice and use of antimicrobial agents in the disinfection, sanitization, and/or sterilization of surfaces and equipment;
  • Experience in laundry and linen management;
  • Experience in interior design management;
  • Experience that demonstrated knowledge of waste management, including the requirements relating to hazardous, toxic, and infectious wastes and provisions for their final disposition;
  • Experience that demonstrated knowledge of pest management, including alternative methods of control and the selection and application of chemicals.

OR

Education: You must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education with major study in Public Health or Business Administration with emphasis in Hospital Administration or LL.M., if related, which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. (One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered an academic year of graduate study.) (NOTE: if using education to meet the specialized experience requirement, a copy of your TRANSCRIPT IS REQUIRED)

OR

Combination: You must have equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience to meet total experience requirements. (NOTE: if using education combined with specialized experience to qualify, a copy of your TRANSCRIPT IS REQUIRED).

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The employee is required to stand and walk a considerable portion of the workday. Must be capable of operating power equipment as needed. Be able to lift, push and pull heavy objects. Must be able to handle and cope with numerous responsibilities, problems, and personalities involved. Work is performed in a Medical Center setting and involves regular and recurring exposure to contagious diseases, exposure to heat and cold, dust, wet floors, and various hazards from housekeeping and laundry equipment.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
