Summary

The mission of the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Rhode Island is to enforce federal law fairly, effectively, and evenhandedly, in order to promote the public safety of all Rhode Islanders and those who visit and work in the Ocean state. The United States Attorney is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes, as well as representing the government in civil litigation in the United States District Court and on appeal.

  • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.
  • Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district specific information.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 3 years post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.

United States citizenship is required.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least five years of legal experience;
  • At least three years of experience prosecuting or litigating cases in federal courts, or litigating complex state court cases that involve voluminous discovery and/or substantial motion practice;
  • Strong academic credentials and superior legal research and writing skills;
  • Courtroom experience and excellent courtroom skills;
  • Incisive analytical ability and aptitude for accurately and precisely articulating the critical issues in a case;
  • A demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility and public service;
  • Outstanding organizational, time management and interpersonal skills;
  • The ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff and client agencies;
  • Excellent computer literacy skills and the ability to handle all aspects of electronic discovery and litigation.

Additional information

Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of pay is $88,062 to $191,800 which includes locality pay.
