Qualifications

US Naval War College: The U.S. Naval War College (NWC) is a Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) institution serving the nation, the Department of Defense, and the U.S. Navy. U.S. and selected international graduates earn Master of Arts degrees in National Security & Strategic Studies or Defense & Strategic Studies accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). The College educates and develops future leaders through the development of strategic perspective, critical thinking, and cultural awareness, as well as enhancing the capability to advise and eventually serve as senior leaders and policy makers. The College also helps to define the future Navy and its roles and missions; supports combat readiness; strengthens global maritime partnerships; and promotes ethics and leadership throughout the force. We are actively seeking candidates with diverse academic, demographic, and professional backgrounds. More information on the college can be found at www.usnwc.edu.

The Naval War College Program at the Naval Postgraduate School (NWC-at-NPS): The NWC maintains a resident, graduate-level JPME Phase I program at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California. It teaches traditional, in-classroom courses year-round to full-time, mid-grade military officers who are enrolled in various M.A. and Ph.D. NPS programs. It is composed of scholars and practitioners engaged in a wide range of teaching, research, and outreach. It is administered under the NWC's College of Distance Education (CDE) and maintains its own permanent Associate Dean and faculty in Monterey. For more information, see the program's webpage at https://my.nps.edu/web/naval-war-college.

Responsibilities. The incumbent teaches the JMO course at the Intermediate Service College level with duties including: conducting classroom and online instruction; reviewing and evaluating student essays, examinations, and other written and verbal assessments; developing curricula; performing various types of service to the College; traveling to, and lecturing at, nonresident seminars around the country as required; and performing educational administrative functions as required.

The JMO course prepares NWC students for the operational arena by emphasizing operational planning and joint force application to achieve military objectives. It examines joint operations from the standpoint of the Combatant Commander (COCOM) and Joint Task Force (JTF) Commander with a particular emphasis on maritime operations. It further develops joint attitudes and perspectives and increases understanding of service cultures.

Qualifications: Required qualifications include an advanced degree in one or more of the following areas: National Security, Strategic Studies, International Affairs, International Relations, or a related field; graduation from a U.S. military senior- or intermediate-level Service College with JPME-I and/or II certification; relevant and proven expertise in joint or maritime operational level warfare and US Navy roles and missions; and demonstrated experience working in the national security and defense environments.

Other qualifications that will make candidates especially competitive include: an earned Ph.D. in one of the academic fields noted above, military Service College teaching experience, Joint Service Officer (JSO) qualification, administrative/program management experience at the graduate level, experience and competence in internet-based instruction, and distance learning experience at the graduate level.
