The Associate Business Development Manager position is the second level of a 5-classification hierarchy. Employees at this level are responsible for the development of investment opportunities related to Distributed Energy Technologies - specifically energy storage and micro-grids - throughout all of Duke Energy's regulated service territories. These investments and offerings address evolving customer needs, generate earnings across Duke Energy's Regulated companies and support the corporation's carbon plans. Employees at this level will be responsible for supporting and leading all aspects of development including siting, obtaining land control by negotiating leases or purchase options, engaging in community and stakeholder outreach, applying for, and obtaining permits, securing interconnection rights, and negotiating, structuring, and executing engineering, procurement, and construction contracts. In addition, employees at these levels will support preliminary project screening and feasibility analyses, prepare investment memoranda (business cases) for project funding approval, and support filings to obtain regulatory approval for energy storage investments.

Responsibilities
  • Develop or have a deep understanding of key distributed energy technologies (energy storage) and the potential business models that Duke might utilize to achieve its investment goals
  • Develop energy storage projects from inception to construction to support capital investment plan and the Duke Energy Carbon Plan
  • Work closely with external engineering companies on project design and execution
  • Prepare project development plans, budgets, schedules, and capital budgets
  • Develop project models and recommend deal terms to close transactions
  • Structure, negotiate, and execute land, interconnection, and EPC agreements
  • Lead project due diligence efforts by utilizing matrix level and contractor support to evaluate site environmental conditions, environmental permitting, land use permitting, and external engagement activities necessary to advance projects
  • Facilitate discussions to educate, demonstrate value and influence internal and external stakeholders through effective written and oral communications, including presentations

Basic Qualifications:

Asc Business Development Mgr
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or related field
  • In addition to required degree, 2 plus years related work experience
  • In lieu of Bachelor's degree(s) AND 2 plus year(s) related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND 5 plus year(s) related work experience


Business Development Mgr
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or related field
  • In addition to required degree, 4 plus years related work experience
  • In lieu of Bachelor's degree(s) AND 4 plus year(s) related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND 9 plus year(s) related work experience


Desired Qualifications:
  • MBA or Masters in Engineering, Business, Finance, Marketing, or related field
  • Certified Project Manager (PMP) or project development experience
  • Experience in the development of energy projects
  • Solid financial acumen including modeling experience and analytical skills
  • Understanding of the regulatory processes
  • Ability to work independently on multiple, complex initiatives
  • Demonstrated experience of the technology and business cases for energy storage
  • Strong written and oral communications skills including presentation skills for multiple internal/external audiences
  • Proven self-starter, results-oriented, requiring minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to work and lead in a matrixed environment
  • Problem solving, negotiation, project management and implementation skills.


Working Conditions
  • Mostly office, some utility site visits
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
