Responsibilities

The purpose of the Associate Data Scientist role is to support customer and agent experiences leveraging the company's data assets to deliver actionable and meaningful business insights using analytics, predictive models, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technological background with expertise in data analysis and building (and deploying) predictive models.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with the ability to help us deliver next-generation analytical products to continuously strengthen BMP's value proposition of "Insurance with ease".

You will collaborate with and provide support to the Senior Management team across a portfolio of diverse projects ranging from Underwriting, Actuarial and Sales.

The position entails working in a dynamic environment, interacting with management and all insurance functions, including IT & Systems, Actuarial, Claims, Underwriting, and Finance.

Key functions include:

The candidate will report to the Chief Actuary of Berkley Management Protection and will apply actuarial and data science methodologies to create both regularly scheduled and project-based deliverables, including:

  • Development and deployment of tools, best practices, and templates to help consolidate, standardize, and accelerate key analysis and reporting, wherever there are opportunities.
  • Service the analytical needs of internal and external customers by providing valuable analysis, reports, dashboards, and/or electronic files as needed.
  • Execute well-documented experiments to identify novel uses of internal and external data to deliver business value.
  • Develop, test, and deploy analytics products and predictive models including data engineering, data analysis, and AI/ML/NLP tasks.
  • Design and implement dashboards and reporting from Underwriting and Sales data to extract actionable insights.
  • Help to manage, maintain, and provide data across multiple platforms and warehouses consistent with corporate data strategy and information sharing protocols.
  • Be a resource for new and innovative ideas to continually challenge the status quo.
  • Support operating entities with ad-hoc requests for actuarial support and overall operating unit analytics.

Qualifications

  • Requires 0 to 3 years of business experience as a data scientist or in a related field.
  • Bachelor's or Advanced degree in data science, computer science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, physics or other sciences (or college degree with significant technical experience in a corporate setting).
  • Education should include significant work in advanced mathematics, statistics, and/or data science. Undergraduate or graduate work in computer science is a plus.
  • Ability to multitask and manage assigned work under tight deadlines.
  • Experience with a variety of statistical and machine learning algorithms.
  • Understanding of data visualization best practices.
  • Understanding of coding best practices.
  • Intermediate-to-Advanced level understanding of SQL Databases and the SQL Programming Language - SQL Server.
  • Intermediate-to-Advanced level programming experience with Python and/or R
  • Intermediate-to-Advanced level experience with data visualization tool like Power BI or Tableau.
  • Knowledge of information technology practices relating to data, data warehousing, ETL processes and data mining.
  • Understanding of project management practices and approaches including waterfall and Agile methodologies and experience with project management software such as Microsoft Team Foundation Server, Jira, Trello, etc.
  • Experience with code management (version control) techniques utilizing tools such as Microsoft Team Foundation Server, GitHub, etc.
  • Prior insurance experience with flow models/platforms is a plus.
  • Ability to anticipate problems, integrate multiple perspectives, and design solutions.
  • Ability to communicate the results of a complex analysis in a way that is easy to understand.
  • An agile team player with strong listening and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-organize, prioritize, and request help when needed.
