Associate Director, Applied Psychology
Job Description
Education and Experience Required:
This position requires a doctorate and 8 years of experience in applied psychology or an applied psychology subdiscipline outside of health service provision, such as industrial/organizational, social, engineering, human factors, occupational health, sports, forensic, military, etc., and a strong background in research methods. The Associate Director functions primarily as a general applied psychologist, managing initiatives that span a broad range of applied psychology topics, which requires an ability to be quickly brought up to speed on areas of psychology with which the Associate Director may have previously had limited familiarity. Advanced organizational skills, research knowledge, and communication skills are necessary, as well as a strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders and cross-functional teams, and successfully navigate complex organizational politics.
Computer Skills Required:
Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams: Advanced user. Email: Advanced user. Internet search tools and Research Databases, including PsycINFO: Advanced user. Data analysis software (e.g., SPSS, R, SAS): Advanced user.
Responsibility:
The Associate Director reports directly to the Senior Director of the Office of Applied Psychology and is responsible for managing a portfolio of projects and initiatives as assigned by the Senior Director. This includes:
- Working with minimal supervision to advance initiatives within the Associate Director's portfolio, advance the goals of the Office of Applied Psychology, advance the goals of the Science Directorate, and advance the overall goals of APA.
- Directing efforts to carry out projects, as assigned by the Senior Director, that educate key decision-makers, the public, for profit and non-profit organizations, and APA members about the value of applied psychology across diverse settings.
- Working with communications and advocacy staff, as well as other staff from within APA's Science Directorate.
- Serving as a point of contact for internal staff and external partners who are collaborating on projects withing the Associate Director's portfolio.
- Actively initiating, developing, and maintaining a network of relationships and/or formal partnerships relating to projects within the Associate Director's portfolio. This may involve frequent communication with subject matter experts for the purpose of establishing and maintaining positive and productive working relationships.
- Keeping the Senior Director updated and apprised of the status of projects and all significant developments relating to projects.
- Advising the Senior Director regarding budgeting and resource allocation issues relating to projects.
- Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of the Office of Applied Psychology and the Chief Science Officer.
