Associate Director, Campaign to End Racism

Summary:Â
The Southern Poverty Law Center (“SPLC) is seeking a dynamic, collaborative, team-oriented, and inspiring Associate Director, Campaign to End Racism  to lead this new Campaign. The SPLC is a catalyst for racial justice in the South and throughout the United States and works in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements, and advance the human rights of all people. The SPLC’s Campaign to End Racism is a new effort housed within the Program Department to help envision and build power for an anti-racist society in the South and beyond. The Campaign will develop, test and scale resources, pilots and community engagement models that acknowledge honest history, build resilience, and prevent extremism and violence. The Campaign to End Racism currently includes the following initiatives:
- The development of integrated anti-racism resources for schools and communities.
- The implementation of targeted pilot campaigns in communities in SPLC’s priority states in the South (AL, FL, GA, LA and MS). The initial pilots include:
- A local community pilot to engage, train and empower Black and Brown students, educators and young people in advocacy for inclusive, equitable education.
- A local K-12 school pilot to test programmatic models for teaching accurate history, ,developing resistance to online radicalization; and building inclusive educational environments.
The Associate Director will have the exciting and demanding opportunity to hone the vision and oversee the day-to-day management of the SPLC’s Campaign to End Racism. They will develop program-related community engagement, grassroots, public education, and strategic initiatives designed to educate, inspire, and move policy and society toward an anti-racist reality. The Associate Director will engage a broad swath of internal and external stakeholders to advance the Campaign goals. This position reports to SPLC’s Chief Program Officer and will directly supervise the  Program Manager, Campaign to End Racism. The Associate Director will guide the efforts of a cross-team Campaign to End Racism Working Group composed of 8-12 staff from the SPLC’s Intelligence Project, Learning for Justice, and the Civil Rights Memorial Center. They will also work in close partnership with staff in and other departments and state offices.
Primary Job Functions:
- Design and lead Campaign to End Racism initiatives from planning to execution;
- Spearhead and hone the development of robust goals, plans, strategies, tactics, and budgets to achieve specific Campaign outcomes;
- Utilize a wide variety of sophisticated tactics and tools;
- Develop measurable metrics for successful initiatives and proactive methods for the day-to-day functioning of the Campaign;
- Oversee the development of materials, resources, and toolkits;
- Manage a team providing mentoring and coaching to support the work;
- Hire, train, establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign duties, and conduct performance reviews;
- Guide the efforts of the Campaign to End Racism Working Group, lead meetings and regularly seek input from members of the working group;
- Serve as a key liaison to engage other SPLC teams and departments in the work of the Campaign;
- Develop external strategic partnerships with key individual, community and institutional stakeholders to advance the Campaign goals;
- Convene and execute external meetings, planning, and campaign events;
- Develop and manage Campaign budget;
- Exercise significant independent judgment to solve problems and determine creative solutions and;
- Other duties assigned.
Qualifications –
Education and Related Work Experience:
- A minimum of seven years of experience designing and executing campaigns or other initiatives with multiple strategies and stakeholders;
- A minimum of four years of management experience;
- Experience collaborating with multiple teams within a large and complex organization; and
- High school diploma or GED.
- A sincere commitment to and knowledge of anti-racism;
- Significant experience designing campaign and/or programmatic strategies and managing and executing plans and tactics;
- The ability to inspire and oversee the work of multiple individuals, even when those individuals may not directly report to you;
- Must be team-oriented but have the ability to work independently;
- Experience building, leading, and working within collaborative organizational and/or movement structures;
- High level of organization and ability to work in a fast-paced environment while successfully managing multiple tasks, deadlines, and meetings;
- Fluency, expertise and experience with at least some of the SPLC’s five impact pillars, including building power for multi-racial, inclusive democracy; eradicating poverty; decarcerating and decriminalizing Black and brown communities; strengthening democracy voting rights; and dismantling white supremacy;
- Comfort with policy and an ability to efficiently and effectively weave policy objectives into campaign execution;
- Experience working in the South a plus;
- Experience with community and grassroots/grass tops organizing a plus;
- Experience doing legislative and administrative advocacy a plus;
- Experience designing communications and messaging advocacy a plus;
- Willingness to travel;
- Commitment to ideals of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion; and
- Commitment to fostering an anti-racist work culture and to anti-racist principles and learning.
Compensation:
     Exempt: This is an exempt role and the minimum starting salary is $92,033.00 annually.Â
     Salary is based on experience.
Work Designation:
This role has the following work designation options:Â
- Local Remote:Â Will work remotely, but is expected to attend work-related activities that occur at the SPLC offices or in the states in which the SPLC operates.
- Telework:Â Will work at an SPLC office at least three days per week and may work two days per week from an alternative work location.
- Remote Distant: Will work remotely and are not expected to work in the states in which the SPLC has an office or in an SPLC office. They may be required to attend occasional meetings or activities in the states in which the SPLC has an office or elsewhere.
Other Special Considerations:
This job is performed under general office conditions, and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
