We are currently hiring an Associate Director Embedded Software to join our Surgical Instrumentation Surgical team in Lake Forest, California. This person will be responsible for a significant impact on the products and processes, ensuring that we maintain our competitive edge in the market as well as gaining an in-depth understanding of the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the eye, as our work is focused on developing medical devices for this field. Your work will have a direct impact on people's lives, making it both rewarding and meaningful. blend expertise in healthcare and product engineering, while working with UI Engineers, Requirements Engineers, Developers, and stakeholders in building world class ophthalmology Software as a medical device (SaMD) Product.

Job Title: Associate Director, Embedded Software

Location: Lake Forest, CA

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the software development lifecycle, including requirements definition, design, development, testing, and maintenance.
  • Develop and implement software development strategies, policies, and procedures that ensure software development meets quality, regulatory, and business objectives.
  • Lead and manage a team of software developers, providing guidance and direction on software development projects.
  • Lead software risk management and writing software requirements to ensure our products are safe for use on millions of patients and in compliance with regulations worldwide.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineering, quality assurance, regulatory affairs, clinical, and project management to ensure seamless integration of software with hardware and other components of the medical device.
  • Ensure that software development adheres to applicable regulatory standards and guidelines, including FDA regulations, IEC 62304, and ISO 13485.
  • Develop and maintain a software development budget, track expenses, and report progress to senior management and project management.
  • Evaluate and implement new software development tools and technologies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the software development process.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to team members, helping them to grow their technical skills and advance their careers, helping to develop a strong bench of technical talent.
  • Set performance expectations and provide regular feedback to team members on their progress toward meeting those expectations.
  • Create and maintain a positive team culture, promoting collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Identify and address skill gaps within the team, providing training or professional development opportunities as needed.
  • Foster a culture of learning and continuous improvement, encouraging team members to stay up-to-date with new technologies and best practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to team members, helping them to solve complex technical problems.
  • Lead by example, demonstrating a strong work ethic, a commitment to quality, and a passion for innovation.

Key Requirements/Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +15 yrs; Assoc.+11 yrs; M.S.+4 yrs; PhD+3 yrs)
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English
  • 7 Years of Relevant Experience
  • 5 Years of Demonstrated Leadership

Preferred Qualifications/skills Experience:

  • Degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience with embedded C/C++ applications deployed on Microcontrollers, including 3 years of experience in a leadership or management role.
  • 10+ years of experience in embedded software development, including 5 years of experience in a leadership or management role.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge of software development methodologies, including Agile and Waterfall.
  • Experience developing software for medical devices, with a working knowledge of applicable regulatory standards and guidelines.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire team members to achieve their full potential.
  • Experience with software development tools and technologies, such as C/C++, Python, and embedded systems.
  • Experience with Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) based multi-threaded applications deployed on Microcontrollers (ST STM32, NXP Kinetis or similar).
  • Experience with object-oriented design and implementation in C++.
  • Experience in applying SOLID design principles in creating robust and maintainable designs.
  • Experience in using static analysis, unit testing and other tools/methods to produce high quality.
  • Experience with waveform generation, transducer signal sampling, motor control and other electromechanical control.
  • Understanding of electronic circuitry: board bring up and interfacing with on and off chip peripherals such as SPI, UART, I2C, ADC and DAC.
  • Proficient in using lab equipment (logic analyzers, in-circuit emulators, oscilloscopes and DVMs) to debug and troubleshoot designs.
  • Experience in using static analysis, unit testing and other tools/methods to produce high quality.
  • Experience using Git and Azure DevOps.
