Mathematica is seeking a dynamic and experienced communications leader to guide/develop our efforts in strategic communication, community engagement, and evidence-based thought leadership; a role essential to achieving our goal of guiding a community focused on the effective use of evidence.
Position Summary:
The Associate Director of Outreach & Dissemination (O&D) contributes directly to achieving Mathematica's strategic goal of leading a broad community focused on the use of evidence. Working closely with the VP and the Director of Communication and Public Affairs, the position is responsible for coordinating project-related outreach and engagement services, including project communications planning, execution, and measurement; message and content development; media engagement and placement; inclusive dissemination strategies; and project-related thought leadership. Responsibilities include leading a team specializing in Mathematica's core focus areas and serving as Communications business partners for our business units; serving as an ambassador of the Communications department with unit leadership; and overseeing development, implementation, and measurement of strategic dissemination plans in support of client deliverables and goals and across relevant sectors.
Core Responsibilities:
- Accountable for leading a dynamic and high-performing Outreach and Dissemination team that makes demonstrable external impact through translation and dissemination of client deliverables and complex policy-relevant evidence in a variety of formats and channels; provide direct supervision, as well as formal and informal mentorship of the O&D team
- Help design and articulate comprehensive strategic messaging; develop and execute comprehensive project dissemination and engagement plans, working in close collaboration with department colleagues, unit and area leadership, project teams, client representatives, and community representatives
- Ensure that outreach campaigns in respective areas are based on in-depth primary and secondary audience analyses, leverage appropriate engagement vehicles, and measure progress through relevant engagement metrics
- Ensure that the O&D team regularly conceives, pitches, and places stories and op-eds in national, local, and trade media outlets
- Collaborate with government affairs function and unit leadership to identify, conceptualize, and help execute policymaker briefing and event opportunities
- Proactively identify, conceptualize, and execute inclusive project-related thought leadership activities and events, including blog posts, podcasts, policy forums, and project webinars that highlight expert voices and diverse perspectives from the field
- Oversee coordination of communications strategies for priority industry and professional conferences and events, in partnership with business unit POCs and Communications department leads
- Write and edit compelling content for the company's external website, stakeholder emails, electronic newsletters, blog posts, podcasts, and social media platforms
- Coordinate with subject matter experts and editorial, creative, and digital services colleagues to produce high-quality digital and print products that effectively engage priority audiences
- Coordinate Communications staffing on bid teams, providing input and QA of proposal content that highlights innovative strategies for community engagement and dissemination; contribute and/or review proposal budget assumptions and estimates
- Actively support the advancement of organizational diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, and apply diversity, equity, and inclusion lens across job responsibilities
- Additional duties may be assigned as needed
- Supervisory and people manager skills; ability to professionally develop, lead, and motivate a team with moderate resources
- Excellent writing skills a must; work should require no oversight and minimal editing
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize and convey, through a variety of platforms and media, complex data and information for diverse audiences
- Knowledge of policy and program issues across project portfolios, including health, education, early childhood, employment, family support, international aid/development, and/or nutrition
- In-depth understanding of communications industry best practices and trends, as well as principles of user experience
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Exceptional ability to manage a large portfolio of projects and competing priorities, forge clarity and shared understandings, and achieve desired outcomes under tight deadlines; strong client service (internal and external) skills and orientation a must
- Strong drive to achieve client and organizational goals, ability to pivot and thrive when priorities evolve; consistently exercise sound judgment and proactive posture
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor or Master's (preferred) degree in Communications, Political Science, Journalism, Public Policy, or a related field
- Seven (7) years of progressively responsible, professional-level experience in a government organization, public relations, or a research or policy-oriented organization, or other comparable experience
- A combination of equivalent education and work experience may be substituted for the above requirements.
This position offers an anticipated annual base salary range of $100,000 - $135,000. This position is eligible for an annual bonus, based on company and individual performance.
