Associate Editor, Axios Local

Quick Take: Axios is a thriving, fast-growing media organization dedicated to providing trustworthy, award-winning news in an audience-first format. After successfully  launching daily newsletters in 24 cities, we are expanding Axios Local to six more cities before year’s end. We are hiring two Associate Editors to help support the production of these daily newsletters! (Please note: This role is remote, but there is a strong preference for candidates on the west coast or in cities where we are launching.)

Why it Matters: This individual will work with the Local Editor and Local Reporters in each market, and other senior newsroom leadership to guide Axios’ coverage of local news, connecting the dots between local, national, and global developments to make readers aware of the narratives shaping their lives in their local communities.

Go Deeper: We are looking for someone who cares deeply about the future of  local news, is obsessed with innovative new ways to reimagine it, and skilled in execution to support this venture with the following responsibilities:

• Partner with the Local Editor to oversee the production of daily local news coverage in select markets, specifically Axios Local’s newsletters
• Work closely with the Local Editor and internal Axios editorial leadership to adapt Axios’ “Smart Brevity” style to local news, shape how the Local product evolves, and to develop synergy between local and national coverage
• Edit the work of a group of local journalists daily
• Curate local news coverage to write screens and stories in partnership with Local Reporters when needed 
• Help conceive larger data-driven and analytical stories that are relevant at the local level with connections to national stories of importance
• Assist with research on important topics, events, and trends driving the conversation in select local markets

The Details: Ideal candidates will embody an entrepreneurial spirit and passion for Axios’ mission and have the following skills:

• Editing experience in a fast-paced news environment
• Experience editing daily newsletters is a plus
• Experience reporting on a wide range of topics
• Exceptionally collaborative with experience working across teams to produce quality content
• Demonstrated knowledge of digital and social media landscape
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Ability to assign and manage multiple stories at once
