We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for an Associate Editor-Ethics on our Publishing and Mission Operations team. This position can be hybrid (working from both office and home), with a schedule to be determined by business needs.

As an Associate Editor-Ethics you will manage peer-reviewprocesses of manuscripts submitted to the AMA Journal of Ethicsยฎ. Coordinate editorial workflow to meet productiondeadlines.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

PeerReviewer Assignments

  • Identify qualified cross-disciplinary subject matter experts to serve as peer reviewers of manuscripts in health policy and ethics.
  • Recruit suitable potential peer reviewers for each manuscript from editorial fellows' lists, professional networks, lists generated by the journal's online manuscript management system, eJournalPress (eJP) and other appropriate sources.
  • Secure sufficient numbers of peer reviewers for each manuscript.

ReviewCommunications

  • Field, evaluate, collate reviewers' comments; prepare peer-reviewers' reviews for managing editors' review and communication with contributors.
  • Facilitate managing editor's articulation of manuscript content development and revision priorities to authors.
  • Flag and eliminate review comments that are unhelpful, irrelevant, or uncollegial; modify comments to be useful to contributors.
  • Summarize, collate, and clarify reviews' key points and questions to motivate content quality
  • Draw upon reviewers' comments to help contributors distinguish key lines of empirical and ethical inquiry in a manuscript and develop short-form content.
  • Investigate and track conceptual linkages between past and prior AMA Journal of Ethics content, insert review recommendations as appropriate.

Early Manuscript Production, Documentation, Workflow

  • Promptly notify editorial staff of key points raised by reviewers such as potential conflicts of interest, insufficient conflict of interest disclosure and other concerns or practices that could undermine the journal's reputation or editorial independence.
  • Send reviewed manuscripts to the editorial assistant for formatting and subsequent use by in-house editors and contributors.
  • Note, share, track review due dates with the editorial assistant.
  • Respond to notification from the journal's editorial assistant that a manuscript is ready to be prepared for peer-review. Monitor peer-reviewers' incoming responses for compliance with deadlines
  • Lead first-round in-house review of manuscripts as assigned
  • Manage eJP-generated "chasers" and manual correspondence with reviewers as needed to meet production deadlines.
  • Work with managing editor to "grade" peer reviewers in eJP to assist the journal's partnership with the AMA EdHub
  • Work with the journal's web administrator to prepare, review, and update the journal's annual peer-reviewer thank you page

OtherFunctions/ Responsibilities

  • Provide training and research support to colleagues as assigned
  • Implement projects and tasks as assigned (eg, be an ambassador for the journal; participate in journal outreach events, programs, professional meetings; verify PubMed and contributor biosketch information; assist image searches, related prior published content searches, podcast interviewee outreach, correspondence, scheduling; evaluate contributor disclosures

May include other responsibilities as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. BA/BS required, Master's degree in Ethics, Health Policy, Public Health, or relevant field preferred
  2. Minimum 2 years' social science, health care or relevant research experience required
  3. Strong research, analytical, and critical thinking skills
  4. Strong editing and proofreading skills; familiarity with AMA Style guide preferred
  5. Strong computer literacy including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  6. Astute attention to detail in carrying out a variety of responsibilities, strong ability to take initiative, work independently, and respond to deadlines
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  8. Excellent organizational and prioritization skills
  9. Strong interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills in a team environment
  10. AMA's safety and policy protocols require proof of full vaccination against COVID19 for employment at AMA (including booster when eligible). Employees may apply for a religious or medical exemption from getting the vaccine.
