Job Description
We are seeking an attorney to provide legal support for Brookfield's growing and dynamic North American hospitality platform, which includes over 40 branded and independent luxury and upper upscale hotels. The candidate will be mainly focused on asset management but will assist with transactions as they arise. The individual will sit in Brookfield's DC office and will be a part of a small legal team with 1 senior attorney and 1 paralegal. The candidate will report to Senior Vice President, Investments, Legal.
Responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing, drafting and negotiating contracts for asset management, design and construction, and commercial teams (for example branding, consulting engagements, public relations, equipment leases, retail leases, and smaller construction projects)
- Assisting with acquisitions, dispositions, and refinancings
- Maintaining and expanding portfolio's trademark and other intellectual property registrations
- Responding to questions from all team members and properties regarding legal matters and engaging outside counsel as needed
- Managing internal compliance for Brookfield Properties Hospitality
- Assisting with land use and zoning projects
- Coordinating with insurance consultants and insurance counsel on claims and litigation
- Working closely with paralegal on permits and licensing for hotels
- Supporting senior team members in other matters affecting hotel portfolio and platform
Qualifications:
- J.D. with 3-5 years experience in real estate law at a major law firm, REIT or other large commercial real estate owner
- Pragmatic and business oriented
- Must be able to work closely with non-lawyers and translate business needs into legalese
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Excellent written and verbal skills
- Ability to work onsite in the office regularly, flexibility to work remotely (1 day) after successful onboarding completion
