Job Description

Direct a portfolio of psychology journals by managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders and serving as resource for best publishing practices. Serve as a content expert in one of the main areas of psychology, as represented in assigned portfolio.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, English, communications, or similar field required; advanced degree in psychology, publishing, or business preferred.
  • 5-7 years' experience in scholarly publishing (preferably with academic journals).
  • Proven experience or ability to become content area expert in specific fields of psychology.

Computer Skills Required:

Intermediate User:

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Online meeting and chat systems (e.g., Zoom, Teams, or Skype)

Familiarity With:

  • Manuscript tracking systems (Editorial Manager preferred)
  • Electronic Editing software

Responsibilities:

  • Direct growth and development of portfolio by applying expertise on content areas, creating and implementing strategies to develop journal content, and promoting manuscript submissions, citations, and content usage
  • Monitor and analyze digital impact metrics and article usage
  • Develop outreach plans, targeted e-mail blasts, and social media marketing to facilitate growth in author and reader bases
  • Monitor budgets and analyze profit/loss statements for portfolio
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with Editors and publishing partners, including external societies and APA Divisions
  • Report to publishing partners on journal usage, performance, and strategic planning
  • Ensure contract terms for all publishing partners are met; negotiate renewals and new Editor contracts
  • Oversee Editor onboarding process
  • Advise governance/P&C Board, publishing partners, Editors, and staff on publishing trends; prepare timely items for APA Publications & Communications Board and Council of Editors meetings
  • Communicate APA publications policies, journal standards, and best practice to internal and external stakeholders
  • Direct editor searches, advising committee members on best practices regarding editor selection and peer review processes
  • Travel to relevant conferences to support knowledge of content areas and experts in the field.
  • Other Duties as Assigned.
