Associate Site Reliability Engineer

Pendo’s Engineering Operations group is currently looking for an Associate Site Reliability Engineer to join our team. This position will be based in Raleigh, North Carolina. 

Team Description: 

Pendo provides software as a service platform that aims to improve the experience of software for thousands of customers and millions of their end users every day through analytics and data insights. Processing more than 15 billion events per day, Pendo services must operate resiliently and efficiently on a large scale.

Our platform is built on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) and Google App Engine. We utilize several Google technologies such as BigQuery, Cloud Datastore, PubSub, and Cloud Functions. We are looking for talented engineers to help continuously improve our production environment and keep it running smoothly as we continue to grow.

Role Responsibilities: 

As an Associate Site Reliability Engineer you will...

• Write high-quality infrastructure-as-code that automates the provisioning, deployment, scaling, and monitoring of Pendo’s infrastructure to ensure that it is reliable and performant
• Write maintainable code for product functionality with a primary emphasis on operations, scale, resiliency, and monitoring
• Debug production issues, learn to mitigate them quickly, and find ways to prevent them
• Maintain runbooks for manual tasks and replace those runbooks with automation whenever possible
• Proactively track our capacity, quotas, and other performance limits to plan for growth in a context of costs and budget efficiency.
• Work in an Agile environment, partnering with team members to identify, define, prioritize, and implement tasks at various levels of complexity
• Growth opportunities include
• Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation to handle product availability issues as well as urgent customer support escalations
• Work with other engineers to ensure that new services are well-designed, properly monitored and have well-defined SLIs and achievable SLOs

Projects you might work on: 

• Code infrastructure automation via Terraform consistent with existing frameworks and configurations
• Contribute to creating new microservices for production deployment, monitoring, and auto-healing.
• Automation of recurring activities
• Optimize Kubernetes operations 
• Participate in evaluation of new tools and services related to observability and incident management

Minimum Qualifications 

• Programming skills in a language such as Go or Python, and a willingness to learn new languages as needed
• Ability to think and talk about systems in terms of possible failure modes, bottlenecks, etc.
• An urge to document all the things so the team doesn't need to learn the same thing twice
• Good number sense for discussing data analysis round performance, cost, and operational metrics.
• Capacity to keep customer experience in mind when looking at infrastructure activities
• A tendency to always leave things better than you found them
• Must be able to work in the United States without company sponsorship now or in the future

Preferred Qualifications 

• Ability to debug, optimize code, and automate routine tasks
• Ability designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting distributed systems
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure using tools such as Ansible or Terraform

Compensation 

Our salary ranges are based on paying competitively for our size and industry, and are one part of many compensation, benefits and other reward opportunities we provide.

The expected salary range for this role to be performed in: State(s) is $85,000 - $95,000

Individual pay rate decisions, including offers made within and over the expected salary range, are based on a number of factors, including qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, and balancing internal equity relative to peers at the company.
