General Summary:
This is an officer level position accountable for leading the teams responsible for the development and establishment of models and management information used for budgeting and performance management to steer our larger operational areas. The incumbent will have a strong understanding of the operational and financial dynamics of group disability and life and individual lines of business including the linkages to operational performance and will be able to design and implement an integrated set of models to satisfy a broad set of expense and operational needs.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build an expense modeling and reporting ecosystem that integrates information across the broad enterprise expense discipline, including Procurement, People and Communications, Finance and Operations.


  • Build system integrations where possible to create efficiencies in the expense accounting, reporting, and tracking processes.
  • Develop, establish, and maintain processes and procedures to ensure that the methods used are consistent with and well aligned with enterprise financial framework principles.
  • Support the growth and development of key information that will drive growth and value for the organization Ensure Expense Models integrate with TMO reporting needs for investment value tracking.
  • Ensure consistency of operational reporting and the Performance Management framework along with increased line of sight between operating metrics and their impact on financial outcomes.
  • Work with Operations management to understand performance relative to plan, developing action steps to address variances, and ongoing monitoring and management.
  • Drive the development and maintenance of Executive Information Systems/dashboards that allow executives and operating heads to drive change


  • Build enterprise staffing models, linking models to budgets and the financial plans, while also allowing business owners to integrate their more detailed staffing plans, used to make regular operating decisions, to this financial tool.
  • Partner with valuation and pricing actuaries to ensure that pricing and valuation measures are consistent with and well aligned with the expense management framework.
  • Partner with financial planning to ensure performance measures are aligned with financial plan expectations and design and implement forward looking what-if capabilities.
  • Assess the skills of the current team, and determine what additional training, skills are needed within the team.
  • Lead teams responsible for weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting of expense metrics and the monitoring of their impact on financial results and plans.


  • Lead teams responsible for providing official expense metrics to external constituents for use in industry studies, surveys, legal requests, investor and rating agency presentations, etc.
  • Leads cross functional teams that work through complex business situations and propose solutions to information related challenges.
  • Partner with Corporate Finance, UUSF Systems, IT Data Warehouse Management, IT Finance or other functional business areas to identify project resources for multiple and complex projects. Shares overall responsibility for project outcome and success.
  • Has ongoing responsibility for implementing process improvement strategies within organization to drive efficiency gains as it relates to reporting and ad hoc support


Job Specifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred
  • 8+ overall experience with a strong background in either accounting, operations, or actuarial.
  • Strong understanding of operations


  • Proven experience innovating with technical ideas and tool delivery.
  • Familiarity with financial reporting metrics (sales, persistency, profitability, claims, operating expense ratios, etc.)
  • Proven ability to manage, develop and motivate people
  • Strong project management skills with experience driving process improvements and efficiencies
  • Ability to operate in matrix organizations, and on cross functional teams


  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with acumen in both professional and business communications
  • Previous experience working through periods of change
