Bulk Power Operations Support Manager

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for formulating and executing strategies for multiple facets of Bulk Power Operations (BPO) and providing leadership for the Operations Support Team. The Operations Support Team functions include:

  • Outage Planning Coordination of Bulk Power System assets
  • Reliable integration of new generation resources
  • Development and coordination of reliable transmission transfer capabilities with neighboring transmission service providers
  • Engineering support for the Open Access Transmission Tariff in the operational time frame
  • Ensuring operational readiness for compliance with FERC, NERC, and NAESB requirements related to our NERC registered functions (RC, BA, TOP, and TSP) and the Southern Company Open Access Transmission Tariff (OATT)
  • Leading efforts regarding the reliable integration of variable, distributed, and stored energy resources and other special projects
  • Providing engineering support for real time operation of the Bulk Power System
JOB REQUIREMENTS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills)

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and minimum of 10 years formal leadership experience required
  • BS in Electrical Engineering is required
  • Minimum of 3 years transmission operations experience is required
  • Minimum of 5 years transmission planning experience is required
  • Experience managing compliance programs to ensure NERC Reliability Standards requirement compliance and knowledge of the standards development process is required.
  • Ability to create and foster a resilient culture focused on safety and continuous learning
  • Ability to develop and leverage strong relationships across Southern Company, the utility industry, and regulatory arena
  • Understanding of the technical aspects of the integration of inverter-based resources into the Bulk Power System
  • Ability to lead and influence diverse teams, develop employees, manage multiple priorities, think strategically and appropriately challenge norms
  • Knowledge of NAESB business practices that govern transmission service and OATT administration
  • Direct experience with power flow analysis and modeling
  • Direct experience with protection and controls is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to shape and influence regulatory initiatives that impact electric industry structure, federal and state utility regulation, power system operations, and reliability policies
  • Ability to communicate complex issues in simple terms, clearly articulate Southern's position, and communicate issues in a timely manner to build consensus towards decisions
  • Experience managing O&M and capital budgets
  • Working knowledge of the market structure differences across the various regions of North America is preferred

  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance the transmission service customer experience while maintaining system reliability and compliance with NAESB business practices
  • Represent Southern Company on various industry groups (NERC, SERC, and NAESB) to promote our positions on industry issues
