Business Development Manager
Job Description
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree is required.
- Minimum of 5+ years of business development, market research, and/or marketing and brand management experience in an organization with intellectual property products and services.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience performing bibliometrics, competitive, and ROI analyses and portfolio performance visualizations for a journal publisher.
- Understanding of the issues impacting scholarly publishing and scholarly communication, including trends in library purchasing, changing business model for scholarly content in books and journals, Open Access, Open Science, Scholarly Collaboration Networks, and other new technologies and trends affecting scholarly communication.
- Demonstrated skill translating data into visual graphics in text and in presentation.
- Basic knowledge of intellectual property and digital service contract standards.
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple stakeholder views.
- Understanding and ability to communicate about common marketing tactics and metrics, including website traffic, Google ads, and social media.
- Demonstrated experience in children's books publishing and/or non-profit fundraising is a plus.
Computer Skills Required:
- Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite is required. Advanced Excel user strongly preferred.
- Experience with bibliometric tools, like Clarivate's Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports, and InCites is a plus.
Responsibilities:
- Be the internal bibliometrics thought leader and go-to power user for guidance on using various publishing tools (e.g., Clarivate's InCites, Editorial Manager, Highwire's Rejected Article Tracker) to perform bibliometric, competitive, and ROI analyses as part of informing business decisions. Help embed the use of these tools into the day-to-day processes of colleagues in relevant APA Publishing teams.
- In support of APA Publishing key strategic priorities, help initiate relationships with non-profit and for-profit organizations that will help APA Publishing achieve its strategic objectives. These might include comarketing arrangements, strategic partnerships, and distribution partnerships. Collaborate with relevant parts of APA to prioritize and pursue such opportunities. The primary focus of this work is on APA's children's books imprint, Magination Press, but also includes scholarly books and journals.
- Where necessary, contribute to new journal development and acquisition of existing APA Division and other Society journals, and renegotiations with existing journal partners.
- Perform market research and analysis to inform APA Publishing publication policies in new and evolving areas to ensure that APA is in sync with the needs of our authors, partners, readers, and the field in general.
- Monitor competitor positioning and use that knowledge to make recommendations to inform both the overall APA Publishing strategy and our marketing approach.
- Using the insights generated via market research and analysis, collaborate effectively with journals editorial to refine their content strategy and to inform their approach to Open Science and Open Access publishing.
- Provide functional supervision of business development tasks (e.g., bibliometric analyses) assigned to Business Development Associate and Author Marketing Intern.
- Consult on scholarly journal author marketing and other marketing initiatives and work with a team that supports a variety of products within the association.
