Job Description

Catalyst Measurement Technical Specialist

Description

We are looking for a talented Catalyst Measurement Technical Specialist to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Components Business Segment in Madison, WI

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • This applied science position applies chemical principles that create and develop product functionalities which are integrated and sold into Cummins' products.
  • The position involves the research, design, analysis, testing and failure analysis of chemical based products, including catalyst, substrates, sensors, batteries and fuel cells.
  • Provides independent leadership of smaller business impact projects or ownership of complex components, products, systems or services with greater elements of ambiguity over the senior or lead engineer level and with full accountability to the project team.
  • Delivers independent execution of established and emerging work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge.
  • Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across a functional discipline area within a business unit.
  • Coordinates and directs work amongst technicians and temporary student employees, assists in the transfer of knowledge to lesser experienced engineers through either indirect (scope of influence) or direct management of a small, local group of engineers.

Provides support and guidance to influence technical direction within a project team and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role (see "competencies" below).

  • Operates as a recognized specialist in a discipline or product area within the immediate team.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

Skills

  • Accelerated Aging Testing and Analysis of Chemical Systems - Designs and constructs laboratory equipment to simulate various aging exposures relevant to practical applications of active chemical components, including thermal cycling, chemical poisoning, and physical masking.
  • Characterization of Chemical Systems - Designs and conducts tests of physicochemical properties, for example morphology, acid-base and redox properties, diffusion characteristics, impedance behaviors, solubility, and chemical poisoning, in order to aid in diagnostics and prediction of performance and health of chemically active components.
  • Chemical or Electrochemical Performance Testing - Designs tests measuring chemical transformation of species, selectivity, electric yield, response to chemical and physical environments in order to determine performance, durability, or state of health of chemically or electrochemically active components; examines and interprets test data using analysis methods to draw conclusions that influence hardware and controls design decisions and to provide information for computational tools development.
  • Product Function Modeling, Simulation and Analysis - Impacts product design decisions through the utilization and/or interpretation of computational tools and methods that predict the capability of a product's function relative to its system, sub-system and/or component level requirements.
  • Product Problem Solving - Solves product problems using a process that protects the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; and identifies the systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence.
  • Product Verification and Validation Management - Develops product systems validation plans from a variety of inputs to identify failure modes, while managing product risk and relative priority; negotiates product requirements against capability to guide project scope; evaluates analytical, simulation and physical test results to verify product capability and validate requirements; assesses legacy versus proposed system solution capabilities and produces recommendations with technical documentation to support product decisions.
  • Builds networks - Effectively building formal and informal relationship networks inside and outside the organization.
  • Communicates effectively - Developing and delivering multi-mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences.
  • Decision quality - Making good and timely decisions that keep the organization moving forward.
  • Drives results - Consistently achieving results, even under tough circumstances.
  • Manages complexity - Making sense of complex, high quantity, and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve problems.
  • Resourcefulness - Securing and deploying resources effectively and efficiently.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

  • College, university, or equivalent bachelor's degree in engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
  • Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
  • Strong preference for PhD

Experience

+

  • Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.

+

  • Product Objectives: Characterization of function of new, artificially aged, system tested, and customer used heterogeneous catalysts in diesel & natural gas aftertreatment systems: diesel oxidation (DOC), ammonia slip (ASC), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts.

+

  • Methods: Catalyst core and powder reactor testing, reactor-based accelerated aging, DRIFTS surface reaction measurement, BET surface area assessment performed by the team, chemical characterization (EDS and ICP-MS) performed by others

+

  • Balance of work: The Stoughton lab has both engineers and technicians, but strong experience in test and measurement (particularly surface and gas-phase spectroscopy) tools and methods is part of the team - hands-on work in the lab is a significant part of an engineer's work, so proficiency in testing is important, as is enjoying testing.

+

  • Larger department: The Chemistry & Kinetics team is one part of a larger group of testing and simulation specialists in engine-based emissions, the thermal and fluid sciences including spray characterization, materials engineering, emissions regulatory compliance, and applied mechanics. Collaboration within the team helps us to learn adjacent sciences and to combine skills and provide cross-disciplinary answers.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary range $84,000-$126,000 Base salary rate commensurate with experience. Additional benefits vary between locations and include options such as our 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan, Cash Balance Pension Plan, Medical/Dental/Life Insurance, Health Savings Account, Domestic Partners Coverage and a full complement of personal and professional benefits.
