The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF) (https://wwww.czbiohub.org/sf) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. The Opportunity

The Chief of Staff acts as the eyes and ears of the President and is a driving force in getting things done throughout the organization.  This role oversees development and execution of the annual operating plan, has direct responsibilities for special projects and initiatives identified by the President or Leadership Team and is viewed as a thought leader in strategic conversations.  Success in this role requires keen strategic insight, strategic planning and execution experience, excellent communication skills and superior financial acumen. You must be an effective collaborator, have broad project management experience and be able to communicate expectations and hold yourself and others accountable.

What You'll Do

  • Operate as the point person for the President in leading the strategic planning process, monitoring progress throughout the year and preparing Executive and Board presentations
  • Collaborate with the CFO and CPO to execute the annual budget and headcount planning process and work with senior leaders to allocate resources and prioritize initiatives
  • Assist in executing leadership decisions and communicate results to stakeholders for key meetings or initiatives by reducing friction and streamlining processes
  • Proactively identify gaps or inefficiencies in operations, organizational structure, or business processes and lead initiatives to resolve these gaps
  • Identify and prioritize key issues early and expedite resolution by integrating information, analyzing insights, providing perspectives and driving to a solution with the appropriate stakeholders
  • Work with team and functional leaders to obtain updates on program initiatives and summarize the information for the Executive Leadership team
  • Manage projects including scoping new initiatives, organizing working teams, establishing timelines, driving project execution and reporting on progress to the President and Executive Leaders
  • Create agendas and facilitate leadership team meetings including developing pre-reads (if necessary), preparing presenters (if necessary), facilitating the discussion, documenting decisions and following-up on action items after each meeting
  • Develop communications for the President and Leadership Team and reinforcing key messages throughout the organization to drive alignment

What You'll Bring

Essential –

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2 years of operations experience
  • 5 - 7 years of experience in a Chief of Staff or Business Manager role leading enterprise initiatives
  • Strategic acumen with the ability to translate strategy into actionable next steps
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Experience building and operating financial models
  • Experience developing and managing annual budgets
  • Broad project management, organization and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • High emotional intelligence with an ability to resolve or avoid conflict using strong interpersonal skills
  • Highly resourceful with strong self-motivation and learning agility
  • Clear, concise communicator with effective influencing skills
  • Excellent attention to detail

Nice to have -

  • Master’s degree in a scientific field
  • Prior roles in early-stage research organizations or academic institutes

Compensation

  • $176,000 - $242,000 

New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. To determine starting pay, we consider multiple job-related factors including a candidate’s skills, education and experience, market demand, business needs, and internal parity. We may also adjust this range in the future based on market data. Your recruiter can share more about the specific pay range during the hiring process.
