Chief of Staff, Marketing & Communications
Job Description
Chief of Staff- Marketing and Communications
The company
Metropolis develops advanced computer vision and machine learning technology that makes mobile commerce remarkable. Our platform is deployed in hundreds of mobility facilities and industries with billions in opportunity. We’re building the digital pipes through which the future of mobile commerce will move.
The role
The Chief of Staff will help articulate, develop, and manifest Metropolis’ positive vision of the future by assisting the Chief Communications Officer in the management of the Marketing, Growth, Pricing, Public Affairs, Design, and People Communications functions. This remarkable and growing team of Metropolites will look to this person for substantive guidance and partnership, project management support, and liaison between the department and the Senior Leadership Team. This is a hybrid role (at least three days per week in-office) with occasional travel required.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a utility player in a department that spans government affairs to advertising to environmental design. We’re working on a lot of exciting projects, and at any given moment several of them are some combination of urgent, meaty, and in need of more horsepower. This person will be expected to step into the breach with the zeal of the convert and a bias for action, even when beyond their domain expertise.
- Project manage critical and cross-functional efforts. Metropolis is a group of two thousand humans in more than forty cities, and this department is frequently brought to bear in ways that touch many parts of the company. Build and manage the systems that ensure the team is meeting our objectives, on-time and on-budget, and most of all doing a remarkable job of it.
- Help the team be its best. More than twenty amazing humans spend their working days in this department, and they need tools to do their jobs really well. Department-specific onboarding, learning and development, OKR processes, organizational design, and budget transparency are just a few examples of ways this person can be a rising tide that lifts many boats.
- Synthesize and share the work of the department. While we’re not looking for a PowerPoint jockey, this person will play an important role in developing department materials for the Senior Leadership Team, the Board of Directors, and other audiences looking for concise and compelling information.
- Act with the imprimatur of the Chief Communications Officer in his absence, internally and externally.
Requirements
- At least five years in a Marketing, Growth, or Public Affairs role. Competitive candidates will have played cross-functional roles spanning two or more of the functions of the department (Marketing, Growth, Pricing, Public Affairs, Design, and People Communications).
- Demonstrated analytical and/or project management capacity. Stitching the pieces (data, people, processes) into sums greater than the parts is a rare talent, and one essential to this job. You should have specific professional experience with data-driven decision-making processes, managing complex cross-functional projects, and reporting out to senior management.
- Remarkable writing skills. Not just ok, not good, remarkable. Your writing should make us wish we had thought to put it that way.
- Proven talent as a chaos pilot. Metropolis is growing quickly, and we’re constantly in the act of building the company we want to be. If you’re looking to inherit a binder of SOPs, this isn’t the job for you. If you thrive in environments that require strong opinions loosely held and can quickly make decisions with imperfect information, we’d love to meet you.
- No specific educational experience is required, though we anticipate highly competitive candidates will have advanced formal training in marketing, communications, business, law, or a related field.
- Experience in the transportation, mobility, real estate, or logistics industries is a plus! A passion for making the journey remarkable is non-negotiable. But mostly we’re looking for builders who are nice and give a damn.
